re: Texas child arrested for building a clock and bringing to school

Something I saw posted elsewhere. Pretty much sums it up.
There are a couple of things at work here.
1) Sue happy helicopter parents have created an environment where teachers and administrators have had to implement zero tolerance policies in place of good, ol' fashion, common sense judgment calls. The nuclear option of calling in law enforcement is used first for the most minor infractions.
2) 9/11 and War on Terror has caused people to become very skeptical of those folks with middle eastern names. Let's face facts, a lot of today's terrorists have middle eastern names. If Smiths and Johnsons were out blowing up large crowds of people in the name of Jesus Christ on a daily basis, we'd have deeper concerns than Ahmed and Mohammed.
In short, the failure of common sense judgment by teachers and administrators is where this boy's situation took a turn for worse. The terrorist angle thrust upon a 14 year old Muslim kid just compounds the stupidity.

Obviously they did those things while still working out for sure that there was no threat. But your sensationalism makes it sound alot more outrageous.

It was discovered quickly to not be a bomb. He never said it was a bomb. He had a teacher back him up that it wasn't a bomb. He never made a threat of any sort. He explained what it was every time he was asked.
And then police arrived hours later, put him in handcuffs, and threw him in jail. For building a clock he was proud of to show his teacher, which he did and then hid at the teacher's request.

And tell me how he didn't have his rights violated here. He was interrogated without an adult for breaking no laws, he was arrested, detained, and written up for breaking no laws, making no threats, and doing absolutely nothing wrong.
Again, I'm fine with the teacher getting nervous about it. I'm fine with him being sent home with an explanation. The cops should not have ever arrested him. That is fricking asinine. There's a reason a vast majority of people agree with me. Its common fricking sense.

Obviously you haven't read everything. It was established early there was no threat and the cops arrived hours later.

No I don't think that.
But I don't think that they should have all said "oh ok go about your business" when he told them the bomb-looking device he for some reason plugged into the wall on English class was just a clock.
If it actually had been some piece of a bomb it's not like he would have just told them so. Deniability would be the point of carrying it in separate pieces.
And don't tell me you think local cops should be bomb experts able to easily determine that it was JUST a clock.

except it doesnt look like a bomb at all.
it looks like a gutted digital clock that we would have learned how to assemble in shop class back in the day.

What should they have done with him while the experts(not some teacher or assistant principal) checked it over to confirm it had in fact never been used or intended to be used as a bomb?

The picture I saw showed a bunch of wires in a suitcase. Nothing like any clock I've ever seen, and odd by anyone's standards.

IMO, the problem with this situation is that the english teacher, the school, and the police failed to show any form of independent thinking.
The officials just cook-book their response like automatons:
Kid has an unusual device -> report to principal's office -> kid sent from teacher with strange device -> call the police -> kid at school with unknown device -> handcuff, arrest, detain, interrogate...
You would think that at some point, either the teacher, principal, or a police officer would break away from the cookbook and simply said 'Hey kid, can you tell me about this clock and show me how it works?'

Dude, that's how homemade electronics is supposed to look like... a bunch of wires, circuit boards, and LCD panels. He is not going to pull out a production ready model...
