Texans fight feral hogs with helicopter hunting: SI.com article

Interesting/entertaining new SI piece on the feral hog problem in the US in general and Texas in particular.
Texas' 2.6 million feral hogs can be found in 253 of 254 counties. "And given their prolific breeding, at least two-thirds of that population—upward of 1.7 million pigs—must be killed each year simply to keep the count level. Current efforts, however, are estimated to accomplish less than half of that culling."
Thus, helicopter hunting with assault rifles.
Swine Country: How Feral Pigs Took Over the U.S. ...And how Texas is fighting back against nature's nightmare. With helicopters.

Yeah, we have a hog shoot at our hunting camp every summer. Take a long weekend, bring a bunch of beer, sit around drinking beer and shooting hogs. It's pretty fun but likely makes little to no impact on the population. We killed about 50 this past summer between the 8 of us.

yeah, they aren't really fighting the problem with helicopter paid hunts. it's an economic reason for folks to keep them around now. Helicopter hunting is a great tool for hog extermination but a lot of the texas outfitters want them around so they can keep making $$$

They usually use shotguns. The hogs are hauling arse, the helicopter is moving all over the place, semi auto shotgun is the way to go.

They have decimated the wild turkey population in my area of SE MO in the Ozarks foothills. We have a ton of govt owned land here, National Forest, Dept of Conservation, etc. and now they have banned hog hunting on public land.

hunters on public land don't usually make a dent in them. you can't shoot hogs at all, even when deer or squirrel hunting?

All the guys I know who have done it, used ar15 and 10's. A few of the companies have full autos they use. I think a couple have mini guns also

The fact so many are making money on Hogs now makes me wonder if the goal is to truly decrease numbers.
