I worked for two weeks in Novosibirsk, Russia ("Novosibersk" means "New Siberia" in Russian and is in south-central Siberia) in January a few years ago and the people meeting me at the airport were telling me how lucky I was to be arriving during a "warm" spell. They told me it had been really cold the week before.

The temperature when I arrived was -19F. The week before it had been -40F.
