Maybe I’m simple, but if this was what your mom got after following a sponsored link from Google, why does Google bear no responsibility for being the conduit for shite like this? Is Google not capable of seeing where these links direct its users?

It is the relentless damn emails that are getting on my nerves. They all center around my PayPal account supposedly having unverified charges on it or CCed emails with something to do about work purchasing meetings that were supposedly hacked or something. One of them is always for parts of some kind that were supposedly ordered by someone using my info/cards. They say the parts will be delivered and I will be charged if I don't respond to the email.
I've been getting like 6-8 emails like that a day. Thankfully, most are caught by the spam filter now, but it is annoying. It all started around the end of last year, so I guess some scammers must have gotten a fresh batch of email addresses and mine was on it.

I click zero links. They’ve drilled cyber security into us so much at work that I will go to main site and do what I can to verify it’s the correct site if not my usual. Emails too. I don’t click links until I verify with sender.

The scammers probably use a legit looking account and flood these ads all at once. They'll get some takers and get what they can. Google shuts down the account, but the scammers probably have 100 more such accounts ready to go.

Scammers are getting good. If I was a criminal, I definitely would be into identity theft/hacking/computer scams

Eventually I think the US will have to erect a national firewall similar to China.
How can you prosecute scammers if they’re on the other side of the world? From a pragmatic perspective it might work, but from an Orwellian perspective it will be a nightmare.

I don't even click on links in my billing statement emails. I always go to my bookmarks.

I’m ashamed to admit, they got me once. Almost twice because I was drunk.
It still bothers me….
