yep really. I was told that he ordered a bucket of wings, and she filled the bucket while another cashier rang him up. guy pulled a gun and demanded cash, the cashier grabbed the money and put it in a bag, but then threw the bag at the robber and jumped behind the wall closest to him. this angered the guy and my mom was just standing there with the bucket at the counter and he shot her.
Jesus. How old were you when this happened?

This sounds very familiar in the present.

The day after Pearl Harbor my grandfather, then 16, lied and said he was 18 so he could enlist in the Army. A few years later he was jumping out of a plane over Normandy on D-Day. I could never get much out of him about actual kills. He did tell me of one story of him tossing a grenade in a snipers nest from a decent distance (he was a pretty good quarterback in school).

My great granny use to own a restaurant on Magazine St in the 1930s. My grandpa (her son) went to Holy Cross.
Then they moved to Iberville Parish and she opened up a grocery store. Before she opened up her store, there was only one grocery store in the area, which was owned by the same people who owned cane fields (and farmed sugar canes). All of their field workers were black so when they would go grocery shopping, the store didn't allow them to charge, they would take the money out of their checks. In many cases, when pay day came around many of them would not get any money because it was spent on groceries.
My great granny was cheaper... Evidently the other store was expensive, so all of the sugar cane field workers started shopping with her. The family who owned the grocery store that was there before she opened hers tried to get her store to close, but was unsuccessful. She would also allow the field workers to charge because it would sometimes take them two weeks pay to pay for what they needed.
Because of that, they were able to buy more groceries. She never once had a problem with people not paying. But there are people who I will run into from time to time who were told the stories of how when my grandmother opened her store, their great relatives were extremely thankful and how she allowed people to provide more for their children, etc.

I stopped a long line of male family first names: Joseph (me, but I go by my middle name), Joseph (my Dad, JO-JO), Joe (my grandfather), Guiseppe/Joe (my great grandfather who immigrated from Sicily), Guiseppe (my great-great grandfather in Sicily), etc.
I fricked up the family line and name because I did not produce a son, who would have been named Joseph. I have failed my family.

My grandfather fought in Vietnam. He was wounded and sent back on a boat and was unconscious. He woke up and the boat had been attacked leaving him one of a few survivors. He said he assumed they had thought he was already dead.

Great, great uncle was Colonel James Doolittle of the Doolittle Raid. I found out through this that one of my pledge brothers I was third cousins with, or something like that.

Great grandfather developed a part of northern miami. Gave his son (my grandfather) the reigns to continue development. His neighbor were the Kennedy's. Ended up leaving the area due to the mob/crime families in the 50/60s. They pressured his political seat in Miami and feared for his life and his family. Moved to Texas. Frick Miami

Where was that grocery store in Iberville? The other grocery store could have been my family’s.

My great uncle was in Bangkok during the Vietnam War with the Air Force. He was walking down the street one night when he was attacked by a man with a knife AND and hatchet. He managed to take the hatchet from the guy and split his skull with it. He was stabbed twice in the process and nearly died. The Thai police came to his hospital room and said when the perp woke up they were going to get his side of the story and proceed from there. Well the guy died and he never heard anything else from the police again.

My grandfather was a ship's captain in WW2. Had two ships torpedoed underneath him.
Most interesting and kind person I ever met.
I loved that old man.

One of my great uncles made it through WWII fighting as a Marine in the Pacific. After the Japanese surrendered he was stabbed in a bar in the Philippines. Was still buried in one of the military cemeteries over there. My nephew was deployed there for a few months a couple of years ago. Went and found his grave. Pretty sure my nephew is the only family member who's paid respects.
