Nah! About 4:30pm. The trade off is that in the summer sunset is 9:30pm and sunrise is 5:30

When we were up there the week of Thanksgiving, it was pitch black at 4:30.

I’ve been to a paper mill in Madison, ME which is just west of Skowhegan. Nice part of the country but it was late summer. I imagine the winter is brutal. If you like to hunt/fish, you will probably enjoy it. Not much else to do up there

I've always found it cool I can drive a couple minutes from my house and get on a highway that will take me to either the Canadian border in Maine, or Key West in Florida.

Pros: If you like to snowshoe, you're gonna love Skowhegan.

Cons: Very disappointing skyline.

If you're from the Deep South and white, I'd recommend that you spend two years in New England, Michigan, Wisconsin, or Minnesota--especially the rural areas. You'll get Big Ten football and Northern Yankee whiteness.

I’m sure tons of posters on here know all about it

I lived not too far from Skowhegan and went to school in Orono. The town’s economy was mostly extractive, so kind of depressed. Nearest “big” town is kind of depressed too, but does have a nice college. The Belgrade lakes nearby are wonderful and full of perch, bass, and crappie, absolutely loaded with fish. Landlocked salmon nearby too. Get some ice fishing gear and a snow machine to get through the winter.

With a nice boat the lakes in summer are swimmable, fishable, and absolutely magical. IMO, this would be a great place to spend a couple years.

I’ve been to Maine a couple of times and really liked it. Seen a shitload of rebel flags out in the country.

One other thing, when you begin to first get frosts early in the year after living there for a couple of years…. There is a dread that creeps…. Cold, wet, dark for a bit. Like I said, the folks that make it work are out bundled up doing outdoor activities year round, because the outdoors are all you’ve got. One other thing, there’s nothing better than being outside in absolute cold and still warm with good clothing. Also, nothing better than being by a fire when a nor’easter starts blowing and you are sipping a coffee brandy by the fire.

The nearest large cities to Skowhegan are Boston and Quebec City.

Closets Popeyes: 1890 miles give or take. Might be thousand miles to a Publix…

Amazon pantry would be a must.

That would be the high point of living there.

I'll let you figure out why.

Ha ! Just went through there about two weeks ago. Commented to my son, “You may want to be grateful I did not discover Maine in my youth”. The coastal cities are really special. For a two year stretch, if the $ are right, I would seriously consider it. Hope you will let us know what you decide. FWIW, the LSU beer coozie stirred a conversation at every stop in Maine.
