I’ve heard of Earl Long, but don’t know much about him except he was a powerful Louisiana politico and an even more colorful character. I’ve heard that he was committed to a mental institution at one time.

I realize I could just google him and learn more, but I’m in the mood for an OT history lesson instead. Anybody got any stories/info on Earl?

He had an affair with a stripper from Bourbon Street. I would be banned if I posted pics.

Second greatest governor of LA after Huey. Earl most likely suffered from bi-polar disorder. That's why he would buy like 100 alarm clocks if they were on sale. He was committed to the mental hospital and then fired the state doctor in charge of mental health and the new one he appointed set him free.

Read the Earl of Louisiana for more about him.

We rented a house on Nicholson in which he was rumored to be an early owner. The house was built to be a whore house so it was amazing. You came into living room and there was a half door. It led to the hallway which led to 5 bedrooms. Each had a door to outside. Then a kitchen and two living rooms.
Then another owner built a 1200 Sq foot room attached to it. We went to the archives and couldn't find anything beyond a couple of vice raids in the 1950s.

That house was torn down when all the houses on Nicholson by the water plant were torn down.

By greatest do you mean worst and most corrupt? Huey set up a graft network that continues to enrich his heirs nearly 90 years after his death.

I once worked with a guy who worked in the maintenance department at Southeast Hospital when Uncle Earl was there. Everywhere Earl went on the hospital grounds, he would have a half dozen state troopers with him. Earl was not in there for very long. He was still Governor, so he fired the head of the Department of Health and Hospitals, Jesse Bankston, and put in a guy that was more than happy to sign his release papers.

He and my great grandfather were boyhood friends. We have a handwritten condolence letter from him on governor's office stationery from when my great grandfather died.

Dr. Morgan Peoples wrote the best bio on Earl. I’ve read every book on both Longs.

Very effective in a lot of good ways but always over shadowed by being Huey’s younger brother.

Poor man’s friend.

If his last name is/was Long and he's involved in Louisiana politics, you can go ahead and rest assured that he's a crooked, corrupt piece of shite.

Kinda the same thing if your last name is Edwards.

/the end. That's all you need to know.

If we had more governors of LA with balls like EKL, LA would be sitting MUCH higher in every damn poll. Instead, well, you know what we've had for the last few decades.
