While the shoulder harness isn't as far down as it needs to be, based on that picture, I'm still surprised he came flying out of the ride. The seat should slow him down just enough to prevent catastrophe.

I was thinking that maybe as a 14 year old he was too small and fell through the seat. But the article said he was 14 but 6’-6” and weighed 280 as an 8th grader.

Wonder if he may have been too big and the harness didn’t click locked before going up

Hate to say it but I think he was having problems from the beginning trying to stay in that seat. Made it to the top and when the free fall began he was barely in and I bet he tried to hang on but that much mass( and probably not that strong at 14 years old ) gravity and Newton’s law were the end of him.

I'm not. How many G's were they under as that thing decelerated? Probably a good bit. Many people can't hold their own body weight like that.. Add a few Gs, and a guy that's almost 300 lbs? Forget it. He squirted right out. Too much mass out over the seat, and too much space between the shoulder bar and the edge of his seat. He was doomed from the start.

That sounds perfectly reasonable

I went back and watched it and paused it rapidly while the ride was coming down to see what happened in slow motion.

If you look closely you can see the restraint lift a little bit. It doesn't come completely open but it lifts up enough for him to slip out.

If you've ever been on a roller coaster with that kind of restraint you know that before you crank the restraint all the way down it will lock but it will have a lot of give to it. It's not until you crank it all the way down that it locks firmly in place with no give. Since this kid was big he couldn't get the restraint down far enough to lock down firmly. So it was "locked" but it was at that point where it still had some give and lift to it. It gave a little and lifted up and he slipped out when the ride braked and exerted a downward force on the riders.

Poor kid. I can't imagine how terrified he must have been. AT 14 he probably just trusted everyone working there would keep him safe

I watch ridiculousness on MTV that toddler version ain’t 100% safe either.

I was once swinging my 5 year daughter around in a circle by her two arms then fast forward 10 seconds into that moment of father-daughter bonding time my daughter starts screaming I pulled her arm out of the socket and we had to take her to ER. You wouldn’t believe the looks you get from some of the nurses too when I was in there. True story

Yes, it doesn't go very high or do a crazy fast drop. And you can see the harness is strapped down tight, and with the thing that comes up between your legs it would be hard to slip out.

That happened to me when I was 4/5 too, but it was my best friend's dad who was swinging me around when mine popped out at the elbow.

That was sickening. The older I get the less I'm willing to do rides like this.

It comes down to laziness of the workers. I've been on roller coasters where to "check" your restraint they just quickly walk down the line and touch it with their hand without even pulling on it. I know they do that because they're required to check but they just go through the motions so them checking will at least be on camera. Even though they didn't do anything to check it.

The kid's restraint was "locked" but it wasn't at the point where it was locked firmly and had some give to it. They probably saw it locked and said he's good to go.

HC I don’t see any 5’6” 150 lb six year olds in that pic though?

That moment of pure fun turned into my ex-wife saying what did you do? I was like I don’t know while my daughter was screaming her head off all the way to the ER.

Not at all...just crazy how big he was already at 14 and was probably destined to be playing on Saturday's somewhere down the road. Just a seemingly bright future tragically cut way too short.
