Notice also how none of them even bother to help the kid after he falls. They just stand there.

In their defense dealing with dead bodies from the ride wasn't in the job description.

Also as said, they acted like it was a piece of equipment or debris. Wouldn't doubt they see things like backpacks and jackets fly off all the time even doing their best to prevent it. I doubt they expected it to be a body.

Did you see how these girls turned-out? It appears at least 1 didn't survive. Sometimes you can't see the worst trauma.
I don’t know how they all ended up doing but I do remember googling a few months after and the authorities were wanting to charge the driver with vehicular manslaughter or something for having a trace amount of alcohol in her system for drinking a wine cooler or the beach earlier that dat but she wasn’t 21yo yet so it’s a zero limit statute or something. Pretty sure in the same article it mentioned all 5 were best friends and the other families didn’t want the DA to peruse liability or something,

That kid checking the harnesses is going to be at fault. The discussion prior to the ride taking off sounds like the kids were confused about a "clicky click thing." He says, " A seatbelt?" They say, "Yeah, a seatbelt." He says, "There ain't none." Apparently making a sick joke?

Then as the ride begins its ascent, it sounds like he says, "On your left. Did you get it?" "No." Ride goes on.

After Tyre Sampson falls to his death, another attendent immediately asks him if he checked the harness. He says yes, and the attendent says, "Are you sure?"

Sorry kid, your neglect was recorded.

what is the sick joke about that? There wasn't a seat belt.

he'll get in some trouble but he's not going to be the primary person. Whoever designed that ride and cleared it for use is going to be in deep crap

how do you know he didn't check the harness?

It sounds like you want this kid to fry for some reason.

He clearly says there ain't no seatbelt then mentions something on the left side as the ride is ascending. I've got nothing personal against him, but that's how it appears from this video.

There.Isn't.One.

He answered the question factually.

eta: unless you think he's trying to make a sick joke by his wording, which is pretty ridiculous considering his age and occupation.

If there is no seatbelt, then who was talking about "on the left side?" If there is no seatbelt, then you are correct. I'm just confused why there was still talk about a seatbelt and checking the left side at the beginning of the ride.

I noticed during the drop every rider's legs were pretty still except for the kid who fell. He was kicking his legs around a lot before he fell out. That makes me think he knew something was wrong before he fell out.

The restraint may have come up on the drop since there's a lot of upward force on the restraint at that part of the ride. And he was kicking around because he was scared or trying to stay in.

The restraint was closed when the ride got to the bottom but that doesn't mean it didn't open up because it could have closed from the force of the ride braking and stopping after he fell out.

No way that kid should have been on that ride if that harness didn't go further down than that.

So incredibly sad. Reading the NBC piece his uncle said he was there with his football team. 14 years old and already 6-6 280lb. Heartbreaking

agree, even if whatever light had come on which is their safety indicator. Seeing that picture above, no way the workers or the kid should have been like "eeeeh yeah this'll be fine". I mean it was barely even covering his shoulders

he was just joking/flirting with that girl in that group, we don’t see him ever talking to or paying attention to the kid who slipped out and died. there are no seatbelts, he was trying to “scare” the girl (i.e. “your shoes untied!” to get someone to look down as a “gotcha”)

the photo above clearly shows the kid was just way too fat to ride, regardless of anything else that’s where the fault is.

now who should have been the one to remove the obese teen from the ride when he cant safely fit in the harness?

I do feel bad for these carnival workers here, especially in todays political climate. excluding a black person from something (even if justified) is just asking for you to be videotaped and thrown on social media and called “racist” and shamed. these dudes are likely making $15 an hour tops and don’t want to deal with that.

why is a ride like this allowed to operate with a person too obese to safely be harnessed? this should be built in to prevent it from even starting

should it have been designed with the strap through the legs just in case someone too fat or that doesn’t fit in does end up riding, so it has a physical failsafe?

Yeah I had to turn it off halfway through while they were still at the peak before the drop. After seeing how insanely high up they were the thought alone is terrifying.

I don’t think I would ever want to ride that

I remember when I was 8 years old and I went to Fun Fair Park by Cortana in the mid 90s. I got on the spider ride and their is a part where it stops. The buggy thing I was in was sideways almost tilting upside down and we didn’t have seatbelts on it. I was so skinny and holding on for dear life on the bar screaming in fear. I just remember the guy saying your doing good bro giving me the thumbs up. I never wanted to get on those kind of rides again after that.

I wonder if the crotch straps were offered and passed on during the purchase of the ride to have one less failure point even if it could have saved lives... it's wild if that's even an option.

Honestly I feel like every ride should have some type of backup security.

If there is an over the shoulder harness it needs to also have a seatbelt type strap to hold the harness down. All the rides I went on at Dollywood last weekend had a strap and harness or bar. Even some of the kiddo rides my toddler does have a lap strap and shoulder strap and those move like two feet per minute and go about 5 feet off the ground if they raise at all. They also have a test seat at the start of each ride. If you can't sit in it and pull the harness down enough to see a green light basically don't waste your time, you're not riding. Saw them kick someone off last weekend actually for that reason. They also did a 5-point clear check for all the big rides. Everyone was responsible for making sure their part of the ride was secured, and nothing would go until all 5 people gave their clear.

I've taken my son on the toddler version of this ride before, he was over the height limit, but just barley, makes me want to reconsider that ride again until he's a little taller. But again, there is a strap that holds his harness down and the way the seats are it would be impossible to slip out.
