I've worked in tech, but not in Silicon valley. That kind of stuff would never fly at any of the companies that I have worked. But then, I wouldn't consider a recruiter as a tech worker.

I have seen companies hire up for a big project or push, then lay off a lot of people after it launches, but they were working.

They didn't hire Ms. Machado to hoard her talent as a recruiter, they paid her to do nothing for another reason. I

Correct,That part is mostly spin, they were hiring people like her Ms. Machado to meet quotas for minority hiring or to meet those esg scores.

They (media reporting this) a making it look like something else like hoarding tslent instead of stating the hard cold fact that would hurt feelings or put the whole equality-equity bullshite in a negative light.

I work for a large cap tech company. I’ve seen people make a half million doing nothing other than latching onto good teams that hit big numbers. My first year with my employer was a joke. I was paid handsomely to observe and learn. I waited for the grim reaper that never came.

Yeah, check out the subreddit r/overemployed. Quite a few people making a quarter a million to over a million annually, employed at several tech jobs simultaneously while they do an hour or two of "work" per day, while spending most days on playing videogames.

Have a college acquaintance with one of these. He's fairly high up at a software dev firm. He told me he has a Monday 9 am meeting that lasts about an hour and a monthly meeting that lasts about 2 hours. Occasionally has to sit in on an interview. That's the extent of his work. Made over $500k with bonus last year. He fully acknowledges he's stealing.

Colleges and Universities took their employment strategies from the same playbook. WSJ article, "there were 15,750 administrators, 2,288 faculty members, and 16,937 students. Jan 5, 2023"

Hard disagree. I do agree that it is conducive to high performance and collaboration, but it's hardly essential. If you find you can't get performance and collaboration without having people sit face to face in a building, then you need to hire better people.

Here we are trying to figure out why young men aren't wanting to kill their bodies by 50 in a trades job making 40k a year. And people still think these guys are free market corporations and not government subsidized propaganda tools.

Upsets? It is noteworthy, to be sure. The efficiency of our economy is crucial.

If I'm paying someone that much, they better be performing from day 1, and performing hard.

90-10 rule is probably more like 99-1 rule for tech.
