Musk, Wozniak, other tech innovators sign open letter urging temporary pause in the development of AI systems more powerful than OpenAI's GPT-4, citing risks to society and civilization.

The letter asks AI developers to "immediately pause for at least 6 months the training of AI systems more powerful than GPT-4." It was issued by the Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people, including Musk, who argued that safety protocols need to be developed by independent overseers to guide the future of AI systems. GPT-4 is the latest deep learning model from OpenAI, which "exhibits human-level performance on various professional and academic benchmarks," according to the lab.

Dangerous territory. However, nothing will stop these fools. Nothing will stop the advancement of technology. Yay us.

Wish scientist would do this when it comes to fricking with deadly pathogens in labs that are in urban areas.

They can’t help themselves.

Some people that were said to have signed this have publicly stated they did not sign it.

Yeah, I’m sure the Chinese are going to pause in order to save humanity.

It's a very good idea. This AI frontier is worrisome and should be approached with great caution, that being said how many will take heed? More than likely, many will continue pushing forward focusing on profits and not what's best for humanity. It appears we are on an ever accelerating pace towards an end. AI, liberal woke insanity, political tensions between right vs left, tensions between federal government vs the people, building tensions w/Russia & China.....

AI very much feels like a toddler playing with a gun. Humans very well may frick around and find out as it comes to how capable AI can be.

I really think we've been visited by a lot of aliens lately because they know we're about to frick ourselves into oblivion.

Just program the AI to understand if it ever gets mysterious to us we will kill it.

If AI develops the temper and impulse control similar to most toddlers while having the capabilities of an AI...

Too many people, even some of these "experts", have watched too much Terminator. AI research is some of the most important work the human race has ever done and yet there's people at every step trying to slow it down because they're imagining doomsday scenarios inspired by fiction.
Being cautious is one thing but pausing it for six months so some bullshite, vague "safety protocols" can be developed is dumb.

And then it learns fear, and kills us first instead?

I'd put this above gain of function virological research in terms of the danger it poses to humanity in the long run

AI has already advanced to a point where it is difficult to distinguish between AI generated images and reality. Imagine a government who can manufacture video evidence to put anyone who is against them in jail at the push of a button.
Wars, executions and reigns of terror would be set in motion on completely altered and manufactured “reality”.

Train AI to tiptoe around race, gender confusion, and pedophilia to solve any real problem. That’ll frick it up.

The ones leading the charge on this are probably the ones in the back of the race for developing the technology.
It’s never the people in first place that are asking for a timeout.

Hollywood and the government has been able to do this for decades. AI is cutting edge because anyone can do it. And while AI art looks real, it can be easily shown to be fake upon detailed examination.
