Teamsters' UPS Trainwreck Incoming

Teamsters say they will shut down UPS on August 1 without a new agreement.
Per CNN, a 10-day strike could cost the economy $7.1 Billion, the costliest stoppage in history.
This will be like the Teamsters padlocking my work, too. Inbound parts shipments will stop and the added stress on alternate shippers (USPS, FedEx, etc.) will make things really ugly.
Anybody preparing for this at work?

Thanks for this, just made a note to check on a few shipments that may need to be changed to Fed Ex

The non union companies will only be able to handle a certain amount of “new” business so you may want to give them some now.

Just hire non union workers. Problem solved
Go through the whole interview, hiring, background check and training, all in about 2 weeks????
And when the strike is over, the original employees come back and get back rolling.
Yeah let’s see how that turns out.

This would be a disaster for UPS

People want to make 100k a year with great benefits for driving a UPS truck

UPS said that the average full-time delivery driver with four years' experience makes $42 an hour. Part-time workers who sort packages make $20 an hour on average after 30 days.

Good move. I worked for a non-union company in the mid 90s when teamsters went on strike. We took on no new customers and only took the freight from existing customers and the freight those customers had that had been the lanes of the union carriers. Unions suck.

anyone who uses the words "just hire" as an answer to a problem hasn't had to hire unskilled/semi skilled labor in a while. It is a pain in the arse if not impossible to hire now

Louisville Courier Journal Some of the Demands

According to Teamsters Local 89, which represents employees in Louisville, the demands from the union include no more excessive overtime; no more two-tier pay; higher part-time pay; more full-time jobs; job security for feeders and package drivers; and protection from harassment.

Seems like a miserable job from my perspective. If they could get workers for less, why don’t they?
