Pay them. It’s hard work and fedex is the worst. If my business has to rely on fedex we’ll be in a bind.

This person most likely has been in the territory for less than three years. Depending on your volume you may not have had a field rep aligned to you.

No, he didn’t. He’s going to offer you competitive rates comparable to what you have with UPS.

up they won’t be able to guarantee we’ll be prioritized and no guarantee they’ll pick up our shipments after Aug 1st.

Thousand percent true. Don’t be a moron and think you can shift capacity day of the strike.

I didn’t care for the aggressive sales tactics and told him I’d find another shipping company as needed if he couldn’t help us

Your option is UPS, FedEx, USPS and DHL Ecom outside of freight. Otherwise it’s just getting dumped back into the previous mentioned networks.

Good luck with that.

Part time workers?

UPS is literally among one of the best seasonal and part time employers out there in terms of benefits.
It isn't comparable.

My guess is...
Some of these part timers are in queue for full time jobs.
I.e. the full time pay and benefits are so good that they have a waiting list of future employees.
And the union (being a union... they have to periodically justify their existance) is bullying management for better conditions for these part time/seasonal employees (especially since a large enough percentage are waiting in line and playing low-man for their turn as a full-timer).

But if there were better part time opportunities out there, this wouldn't be a strike. The employees would go elsewhere.

This is just a ploy by the union to make itself useful. If there aren't enough conditions to complain about, sometimes you have to make them up.
