I know the OT hates on some teachers, but it’s pretty fricked up if one of the demands not being met is A/C.
Didn't have A/C in school until I got to High School, didn't kill any of us.

Neither did I, but that's not the point.
The funding is there.
Kids will learn better when they aren't on the verge of having a heat stroke.
The Superintendent will certainly have Air Conditioning.
Every administrator up the chain will have some sort of AC.
Schools aren't underfunded, they are mismanaged.

It’s because they care so much about the kids education

The question I have is this… since schools are all short on teachers… where is that unused salary money going?
Bloated admin salaries.

In Rapides parish we have people who are curriculum specialists that accomplish absolutely nothing and get paid on the principal level. That’s a dozen teaching positions. So many more at the district office. Then don’t get started on consultants. They had one lady fly in from Colorado for $25k per trip to tell teachers absolutely nothing helpful and have zero idea how to implement it or answer meaningful questions.
Bloated admin salaries
That’s one of the biggest issues today, too many people with too many ideas that don’t work and every higher up trying to be innovative.

The feminization of our public schools is a problem most people don’t recognize or acknowledge
I know a number of dudes that wear mask on the job, and no limp wristed fairy like you would call them feminized in their presence.

The union said the school board walked away from the bargaining table on July 28 and has refused to agree to language in a contract that “will guarantee Columbus students basics like air conditioning, appropriate class sizes, and full-time art, music, and P.E. teachers in elementary schools.”
These conditions were standard when I was in public school 22+ years ago. What am I missing?

i'm guessing they don't want to teach in class anymore because of that deadly virus?
A family member of mine is a retired teacher. As soon as they qualified they got the F out.
It had nothing to do with a virus.
Pretty soon being a teacher will be as or more dangerous than being a police officer

And that's why I have no problem at all with the teachers asking for more money and better work conditions.
No a/c in classroom? Cool. Then there should be no A/C at central office, either.

I am very skeptical of the reasons the Union provided for the reason for the strike.
Unions are very cognizant of the value of p.r.

Bottom line is the teachers union only looks out for the interests of the teachers union.

I'd respect them more if this were a hunger strike.

To be fair, you probably didn't also have 35 kids in the same classroom that was built to accommodate 20 and could actually open your windows.
A lot of school districts restrict opening windows now for safety reasons or have built schools with windows that are tiny compared to the old school floor to ceiling windows.

School districts like good PR as well. And if the teachers concerns were unfounded... there is an easy way for the district to dispel those concerns.

Woodlawn High is about 200 over fire code. They have 30+ kids in rooms that are supposed to be storage and teacher lounges.

Superintendent should give teachers until Monday, 8/29. If you’re not in school to teach, you are fired and will be replaced.
That’s what I would do.
