I love birding, ducks specifically, so much that I use a Browning A5 to get an up close look.

get her a pair of binocs. 8 or 10 times magnification. I don't know your price range so it is difficult to recommend a specific model. I like Vortex brand. You don't want some massive pair, they need to be comfortable for her to hold.

The nature trails at Jean Lafitte National Park (Barataria Preserve) are great, especially for owls in the early morning.

Download the Merlin app from the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. It has pictures and actual sounds of the bird(s). Very helpful and educational in identifying. It’s an excellent resource.

I’m pretty much a backyard birder and photographer. You can get good reach if you buy used photo gear carefully - and not spend a small fortune. Look for a crop camera and a 300mm f4 lens. Avoid slow zoom lenses.

Feeders will draw the birds in. Be sure to have water for them. Believe me, they’ll flock to your yard.

I have had Purple Martins for years, and have just recently started photographing them. It is more fun than I expected.
I do the same with the bluebirds I have nesting.

Tell your girlfriend that the favorite bird to watch for red blooded men is the long legged split tailed double breasted mattress thrasher.

j/k; seriously, also post this on the outdoor board, there are folks who are in to it on there.

Good set of binos dont skimp on these. 8X is best for song birds, raptors go with a 10X
iBird or any of the apps
journal to note your sightings \ lifers
LA bird checklist

Many great birding spots in LA.
Bird fest in grand isle is good, but I have seen the most species at Peveto Woods in Cameron, it is like high island, TX without the crowds.
But on any trail, state park, etc you can find birds. Spring migration will be kicking off soon.

Best birding movie - The big year with Steve Martin Jack Black and Owen Wilson.

Get a good pair of binos and Sibley Guide to Birds. It really is the best guide.

Peveto Woods
Jean Lafitte
Sherburne South Farm
Lacassine NWR
Cameron Prairie NWR
Kisatchie in Central LA
Grande Isle
Big Branch Marsh NWR
Tunica Hills

As far as field guides--Nat Geo is pretty good. Petersen's is probably one of the best.

A decent pair of binoculars is about all you need for starting out. Some of the hardcore people use spotting scopes, but I think that's overkill for most.

I've seen over 200 birds in Louisiana, and I'm a casual birder at best. Used to be really big into it as a kid, and wanted to go to school to be an ornithologist. Thankfully, I didn't specialize to that degree.

The yellow finches are arriving. Go to that birds unlimited and they can hook you up with a sock feeder. Their seed is very small.
I have a big yard with feeders. Cardinals love the black oil sunflower seeds.
