Below is an age frequency chart based on a sample of TD posters. A few month ago there was a post from which the posters age could be inferred based on their response to the OP question. And recently there was a post wondering about the ages of posters.

This is based on 195 respondents and while I am not a statistician that seems like a pretty good sample size. The mean is 42 and one standard deviation is 11; not sure the population is normally distributed however.

I used 5 year age brackets. So, about 5% are ages 25 to 29, a little over 8% are ages 30 to 34, etc.
The distribution looks reasonable to me but there may be some bias as it is only based on the posters that responded to months old question.

Edited to respond to some post and to provide info:

This is a link to the post from early March about the OT age breakdown. This was the prompt to analyze the data and my own curiosity.
OT Age Group Question

The OT post from several months ago from which the posters APPROXIMATE age could be inferred is this one.
quote:

What was the Billboard Hot #1 single on the week you were born?

203 responded, 195 were useful (originally wrote 193). The other 8 were not useful; I couldn't find the song in the chart or the post did not make sense.

Is the question bias to certain age groups? Maybe, but I doubt the results are significantly different from the actual age profile of the TD population. The younger crowd do not seem interested in TD topics - just based on what I read on here about the students. The under 30 groups may be underrepresented as they did not answer the Billboard question but I don't think there are a lot of them on this board, as a of % of the total.

The mean is 42, the standard deviation is 11; which I think means 67% of the TD population is between 31 and 53. Seems reasonable to me.

Did the respondents to the Hot Billboard question lie? Not likely, IMO. Why lie about that?

For songs that were #1 for multiple weeks, I just picked the middle week as the date to use to calculate the age. It is not possible to determine the exact birthday of a respondent from the responses.

50 and above seems too much imo

25 to 40 is the bulk

This is actually pretty cool. You should do more of these with more categories. Might be valuable to chicken

Looks about right to me. Mid 30s plant baws and mid 40s guys that don't have any friends because their wife doesn't let them see to be the two biggest demographics on this site.

I would want to see the posts you are referring to here

you are banking on people posting serious and honest responses, which I find to be highly problematic

Are you really 41 or did you lie in the post the chart is based on?

This seems fairly right. I’m only 17, so I’m an exception. I have to be one of the youngest posters on the entire website.

Your chart is wrong.

It is based on a sample, 193 respondents to a specific question that someone asked about 3 months or so ago. If you did not respond then you did not get counted. And while I don't remember the user names of everyone that responded to the question I don't recall yours. It was not a question that I posted, btw & fyi.

the sample isn't just about the quantity, it's also about the quality. What that means is that, of people of a certain age bracket were more likely to respond to those two threads, then your data is skewed.

That's not even counting the fact that the age guess from the first thread may be wrong.

now correlate that range with mean range for LSU's SEC championships in football/basketball/baseball
