Who get the money for the medallion? The city or the cab union?
Whoever is selling the medallion gets the cash I believe - probably another taxi driver. A little like liquor licenses in some parts of the country.

Well being that the value of medallions are down, would now be a time to buy a few up?

I'm forwarding this to the AMA and the medical schools, so they will stop limiting the number of doctors
The money used to pay residents is directly tied to Medicate funding.
If you want to increase slots, you have to increase funding.

That's great. Let's pay residents less money. Y'all don't do much.

I don’t see how the industry can ever recover to pre-Uber/Lyft days. Insurance companies have bought in and now provide endorsements for coverage. Not sure what cabs could provide to gain a competitive advantage. The solution isn’t to regulate Uber and Lyft into oblivion.

I've got folks I know in N.O. that have paid big dollars for their CPNC numbers to own their cabs and they are now worthless since Uber and Lyft came into play.
Not crazy numbers like in the OP's post, but still a good amount of change for a cabbie to put out to own his cab.
Now it's money down the drain that they will never recoup.

Sucks for them in believing anything but death is guaranteed in life.

The solution is to deregulate the cab industry so they can compete on a level playing field and let the market determine. Get rid of the medallions and the limited number.

Ok what do these drivers know about Hillary Clinton?

Why should ubber and lyft be exempt from the taxi regulations? I am not a big government fan but, I am also not a fan of people getting to pick and choose which rules apply to them.

Sad story. The guy was busting his arse off to make it and couldn’t get out of a hole.
Now for my cynical side. How does one with likely very little assets go about getting a (basically) uncollateralized loan for $700k? Certainly a bad investment on his part but likely some “predatory” lending practices going on. Is it ride share services’ fault? No.
There is a big political push to reduce traffic in the city. One proposed measure was to add the price of a subway ride to every taxi or Ride share trip. Another was congestion fees for certain areas and times. Now the aim is to eliminate Uber and Lyft. Contributing to the Uber’s success is the lack of reliable and accessible public transportation and that cabs are generally shite.

Why should taxis be subject to government regulations and medallion limits?

These are probably the taxi drivers who used to laugh at me and my friends for trying to get rides to Lakeview or Metairie from downtown after big events. I have a problem trying to feel pity for them.

I can’t imagine paying 700k to drive a cab to earn 32k a year. Why on earth would you do that?
You buy the medallion based off the current market. You can borrow against the medallion. Then sell the medallion when your ready to retire.
It’s basically like an income property.
