New York taxis are all on an app now and you can pay and request a ride just like Uber. I actually find it to be better because Uber/Lyft largely sucks in the city and there is always an empty taxi nearby. Taxis are still gross, but in NYC its the way to go.

Ummm... not all all. You do know LA commercial boats make up a far less percentage of catch than out if state boats fishing with LA permits, yes?

Has nothing to do with rec

Yes, that’s a very well known. What’s your point?

Do you know that the majority of the oyster leases in La waters are owned by immigrants and a company out of Texas? Who gives a frick? The state still receives revenue.

Too bad too sad if the La Commercial guys are getting out fished. They need to step up their game.

Right, if the market cared about who was catching the fish they eat, they would only purchase from LA fishermen.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, New York cab drivers make about $32,000 a year. Uber claims the average salary for its drivers in the same city is above $90,000, presumably after the company takes its 20 percent cut from the driver's total fares.

I can’t imagine paying 700k to drive a cab to earn 32k a year. Why on earth would you do that?

You should google how much it costs to operate a hot dog stand around New York.

The thought was it an investment.. something to pay off while working and then be resold at the end of a career, and retire on that money. Like buying a house. Except sometimes markets crash.

T&A > T A X I even though T&A is a lot easier to find than a cab.

New York City’s cab industry, dependent on the market value of the once-coveted taxi medallion, has been upended by the proliferation of Uber and other ride-sharing services. Drivers have been demanding changes at City Hall to protect their livelihood, but at least five cabbies have buckled under the strain of debt since December

They have no one to blame but themselves. Shitty, dirty cabs, never punctual, no English (or very little) and terrible customer service.

Not that NYC is going to have this stuff all the time, but if you drive a cab you need to at least make an effort to compete with the likes of rideshare programs. If not, I have no sympathy.

But it’s value was artificially created by unions and government regs. It’s only rare because the government and unions say so.

Not unlike the value of crypto currency, which has no true intrinsic value and is rare only because the creators made it so.

Who get the money for the medallion? The city or the cab union?

From the person that owned it. Buying medallions doesn't work where you buy them from the city or union, as there are only so many. The way it typically worked, is someone would buy one. Driving the cab provided their income, then when they got ready to retire they would sell their medallion. Given that the quantity remained constant while the city grew, the value of the medallion appreciated over the driver's career. Thus selling it at retirement provided something of a nest egg.
