Mr. Chow, 56, who lived in Queens and went by the nickname “Kenny,” disappeared on May 11. His body was found floating in the East River about nine miles south, near the Brooklyn Bridge, on Wednesday. Friends and family members believe Mr. Chow jumped to his death, adding to a string of apparent suicides of traditional taxi and livery drivers in the city. It marked the fifth suicide in just over five months. The medical examiner has not yet determined a cause of death.

Why the frick did it cost 700k to drive a damn cab? Thats several college tuitions.

Taxi union. They artificially limit the amount of operators so as to control the market and rates. Why do you think they raise shite about Uber and Lyft?

Ironically this is what Mr. Chow should have been pissed about as that cost probably rose because of government regulation.

Shootout to everyone who donated money to the Kardashian girl so she can become a billionaire.

She’s really earned it.

It sucks that cab drivers are hurt by Uber but that's just way the free market works. The public shouldn't be denied a cheaper and better service just because it hurts another business.

Technology is crushing the cab industry. I'm surprised NYC hasn't outlawed Uber to protect its revenue stream.

These guys didn’t create the system themselves. I feel sympathy for them.

When you mess with the "free market" influencing demand and supply. Prices get artificially raised.

See housing, education, and healthcare.

I've seen idiots online blaming this on capitalism. Nevermind that it was the union and artificially driving up the cost (and therefore worth) of a medallion. Free markets could have prevented this from ever being a thing, as every driver would be like a gypsy cab.

Who get the money for the medallion? The city or the cab union?

Are there no cab companies in New York? Is it just one monopoly called Yellow Cab?

Isn't this a huge contention, though, with LA Gulf fisherman in reaction to larger wallets who come in and buy up quota? Like snapper?

Are you trying to argue a point between commercial fisherman and recreational fisherman ?

Man, you’re really reaching on that one
