Because teenagers are fricking dumb and they can’t see past their own nose. And clearly this kid didn’t want to do any work around the house and a way to stop getting asked is kill the person who asks you to help out.

Theres some kid around here jailed for murdering his father for a similar dispute. With a knife. Then he came for the uncle who ran his arse into the woods.
I wouldn't worry about whether or not you pursued charges. If you would try to murder your father even if he is an a-hole theres not much you wouldn't do.
Sadly he will do some shite like that again and the next person wont be as forgiving.

My wife was with FIL for cancer treatment and they asked him about prior injuries/surgery and he starts telling about gunshot wounds and shite. My wife had no idea. Apparently he was a rough dude back in the day.
