I have noticed a substantial drop off in quality workers at Target in recent years. As a stockholder , albeit 0.000000001% , I am OK with this as long as it translates to a better quality workforce.

Minimum Wage,which I was paid,was $2.10 an hour.

It won't be enough. By 2020, the $15 an hour crowd will complain that $15 was based on cost of living a decade ago and now they want $20 in 2020.

A lot of companies, even small ones, start employees over the minimum wage. Why? The labor pool sucks so bad they have to pay more to attract decent employees. They make up most of that money by having efficient employees that show up for work, don't cost as much to train, they have less turnover, don't have as much theft, and their customer satisfaction increases.

The problem occurs when the gov't sets a minimum wage. Then the employers take on all of the costs without any of the benefits. Some can pass most of that cost off to the consumer

So glad I don't shop at Target. Their prices are about to be even more obscene than they already are

Target is not super expensive and have a better quality of product compared to Wal Mart. Only way Target could be considered "obscene" on pricing is if you are poor. I do most of my shopping on Amazon but when I don't, it's Target or Costco

I believe what you've given is a myopic headline. Here's the actual headline:

"Target maps a path to a future with no employees"

To all the morons whining, this is how it is supposed to work.

Target can pay the employees what it wants and the ramifications that comes from that is on them.

Target > Walmart in shopper experience, so if they can increase that without substantial increase in the cost of goods full speed ahead.

Target actually just lowered prices on alot of common items and groceries. Considering that news with this, it has to be automation in the future coordinated by a few key employees.

That, or economic suicide.

how about we just eliminate the federal minimum wage altogether and companies pay whatever they want to pay?

if mcdonalds wants to pay $2 an hour or $25 an hour thats on them to decide.

pay workers exactly what they are worth so the slacker gets $4 an hour and the hard worker right next to him doing the same job gets paid $10 an hour. if the slacker wants more money then do more work and "earn" a raise.

Self Checkout will be a permanent fixture.

All you will need is a backroom / HR / stockers.

Possible, but no-skill jobs will be cut.

So that means that the folks with no skills who want this so bad will now have an ever further depleted job field.

an aside, I'd be pissed off if I was about to hit $11 an hour and suddenly everyone is making $11 an hour.

I was thinking the same thing. What if you were an assistant manager at $13 and now every new slapdick is making close to what you had to work hard for?

I worked there part time and made 9 an hr.

I've seen people place beer and condoms near female clothes. It's a shite show for a store.

Also if you have just about any college degree and want to work full time you can become a manager pretty easy.

It's a place where customers can shop cheap if they play it right. Many workers simply neglect taking the labels that are on sale down after their expiration date.

Median wages have been rising for a while.

I would guess that Target feels this is necessary in the current labor market than some SJW virtue signal.

Good for them. Not relying on the govt to make them do this.

If they can still please investors, go for it.

Private company, they can do what they want, absolutely NO ONE should have a problem with this.

Problem is, other companies will follow suit. The money has to come from the spenders, driving inflation up.

You ever notice how a combo meal at any fast food place goes up in price whenever mon wage goes up? Why is that?

And who suffers? The person making 100K a year or the person makng more money at min wage?

Prices for everything goes up when bottom wage goes up, so essentially the bottom wage earners actually make less money.

It's not like the wage goes up 50% and then you start paying _50% more for things at Target. Target will find ways to reduce their operating expenses including having less employees.

Target is going for the "pull at heartstrings" model. It's not going to end how they think it will. At the end of the day, people are rightfully selfish, and want to save money. Passing costs to the consumer for activism is not a good business model. I expect their stock to reflect that. Investors won't be happy.

Tell the execs to come visit their stores in BR. Trash over flowing garbage cans, parking lots are dirty, clothes slung across the floor, meat/milk sitting out in the home decoration area...

Walmart is almost inviting compared to those two stores.

Looks like a lot of baws in here are jealous that Target employees will be making more than them.

But you can also reduce labor costs by reducing turnover. Recruiting, hiring, training, etc. all have costs that a company has to factor in as well.

It can be worth it to give one employee an extra couple thousand a year in order to retain them as opposed to going through 2-3 employees for the same position during the same time period. But that’s a question/problem that each individual company has to figure out.
