Is it normal to have tankless hot water heaters located outside?
Mine is in basements. My dad’s is in his insulated garage. We are in colder climes than Louisiana (at least usually).

So maybe reset the breaker?

This. Leave the hot side to the faucet on. Use a propane torch to warm the supply side to the heater. When the frozen plug frees the unit will kick on.

Damn, baw. You gotta run a heat source in the middle of the night. I always delay our washer to run on sanitize about 0300.

I have a tankless hot water heater and only my hot water tap freezes. I even opened it up to a steady stream last night and it still froze. No issues with the cold tap, only the hot. It takes about 20-30 min to thaw with a blow dryer if needed

Google your model. Most have built in freeze protection. Mine has it but must be turned on in the settings. This advice might not help you today but in the future possibly.

yes in the South where basements are uncommon.
Both of mine are outside, one attached to an outside wall, west facing and protected by a small three sided enclosure, right by the gas meter, and the other cut into the side of the house in an enclosure with a vented front cover. Controls for both located on other side of wall on which they are installed.

Mine are in the attic.

You need to go out and hit it with a hair dryer or heat gun. Same happened to me.
Happened to me last night. I was out there freezing my arse off at 11:00pm with a hair dryer. Mine froze at connection from tankless to water line into house.

Comments are making me feel better about it. Kinda helpless sitting in a hospital room.

texted him pics from Pensacola today and he was amazed

Are the water pipes outside insulated well? If not you’re an idiot for not doing this.
My pipes at home are all exposed and not insulated.
we so rarely freeze that far south that it's never an issue.
in the very rare circumstances when it does happen, I turn off the main water valve to my house.
open the back and front outside spigots and shoot compressed air through the back one for a few moments.
alos have an inlet and outlet valves on my tankless and I drain it too.
it removes most of the water from the piping so there isn't any there to freeze.
when I turn water back on, I have water when nobody else does because they didn't drain their pipes.

electric tankless heaters can be installed anywhere (inside or out)
gas tankless need to be either outside, or have an exhaust vent installed leading outside somewhere.

in the future drip your hot water side. The tankless doesnt kick in when you crack it but it will keep it from freezing if its exposed.
I found out the hard way last year when it got 10 degrees outside. I now drip the hot side (steady stream, about the size of #2 pencil lead). It's enough to move water, but not enough to kick on the unit.
FYI - most tankless units have an "anti freeze" function that will keep the inside coils from freezing and destroying the unit. However, that DOES NOT keep your lines running to/from the unit from freezing. Your options are to either buy the "skirt" that goes below the tankless, or build your own. With or without the skirt, I strongly recommend insulating your pipes going to/from the unit and still dripping your hot side.

Condensate line is frozen—at least it was at my house. Hair dryer and some insulation on the outside pipe fixed it.

If you call a plumber, be forewarned that they’ll be a pretty high premium because it’s a tankless job.

That happened to me last year. I had to replace the flow sensor that had gotten scaled up. Basically, the heater didn't recognize that there was a demand for hot water because the sensor was not sending the signal to fire up the boiler.
It's a Triangle Tube Combi boiler for reference.

Take a floor heater, set it on any sort of platform in front of it and just let it work.
It will thaw all of that out in an hour at most

Genuinely do not know.
Seems like that would lead to problems like this.
Mine is outside. Keeps the carbon monoxide out of the house. Mine replaced two 50 gallon gas water heaters. when we remodeled our plumber said the vents from the old ones were not sufficient (maybe wrong size) for the tankless and it was easier and cheaper to put it outside than running new vent to outside.
I have not had a problem with mine. But its on the east side of the house. I dripped my faucets and we only went down to 12 last night, with no snow here in Tuscaloosa.
