The coronavirus was in the US in January, so why weren’t hospitals overrun in February when no one was “social distancing “ and no restrictions in place?

You mean they didn’t need to tell tax paying citizens and businesses owners what to do? That people would make overall good decisions left up to themselves without government mandated and oversights in every little thing?

Honestly, I'm tired of thinking about it. I just want to look forward.
Economists and epidemiologists will be studying and arguing about this for a long time. Nobody on the OT can give you answer with any real certainty, regardless of how confident they feel about their answer.

The vast majority of hospitals across the US have cut payroll and/or fired workers due to massive financial losses from the total lack of full beds.
This won’t end until we develop immunity. Our biggest mistake was closing the schools. That should never happen again.

We won't know. Just like we don't know what would have happened with WWII in Japan had we not dropped the bomb. We can guess, but that's all we can do.
But, since I frequent the OT, I know what is right. And IMHO, I think it would have been worse than what it is now, but not by very much and none of the hospitals would have been maxed out. I really think humans are smarter than government, and people would have self assessed what to do and gone about things cautiously. or not, depending on their own situation.
Further, we would be better off now healthwise than we are now due to the initial wave of the virus would have run its course.

Not sure how we would have fared health wise. We would be better economically, and it would be over sooner. Regardless, we are a free country and the draconian restrictions the Govt placed on us is bullshite.
They should have done recommendations only, provided people with factual information and trusted us to do what’s best for us. Let people and businesses implement social distancing, disinfecting policies, and close up their business if they choose to. Encourage the vulnerable to stay home.

I don’t think the government ever had to get involved. Most places were shutting down of their own accord and of course because its government they painted with a broad brush with zero nuance and way overreacted with the stay at home orders.
I don’t think the emergency powers these governors wielded in the face of COVID-19 should be legal. The ends didn’t justify the means and that’s way too much power for individuals to have over their constituents.

It's relative. I'm just comparing our government to every day people, which of course, has it's fair share of idiots. But, they're not all idiots, like in the government
