I’ll admit when I’m in the river/lake, the thought of some danger does occur to me, but I don’t fixated on it. It’s not a deterrent or anything, just a mostly irrational thought.

If you have an open wound/cut and have a compromised immune system, you should be creeped out from swimming in lakes/rivers/oceans. Vibrio is deadly and it spreads fast.

Let's see if we can solve this question quickly. Does your boyfriend feel the same way? If so, then the quick answer is no.

Flesh eating bacteria are biting Galveston to Grand Isle.

Sea Lice are tearing up Gulf Shores to 30A.

You have a right to be scared. #metoobro

I do triathlons and a lot of them in the area are in manmade "lakes" which are just glorified catch basins for drain off water. Last one I did was in Lake Woodlands which is supposed to be one of the worst lakes. Reviews of the swim portion were pretty bad. Can't see your hand in front of your face, smelly, tastes horrible, full of bacteria, etc.. I grew up swimming in the bayou and stuff, so maybe I just have low expectations for water quality. But after doing the race, if that's the worst and people bitch that much, then I've come to the final conclusion that people are pussies.

As someone who grew up swimming, fishing, water skiing on the Amite/Diversion...I feel more comfortable in that water than the clear blue ocean.

Plus the Amite River, where camps drain their sewer water, helped build up my immune system. I very rarely get sick.

I used to play in a retention pond with my buddies when I was younger. I just thought it was a neighborhood pond with turtles. I think I'm okay with swimming in the lake

I try to swim in areas with a lot of Gators. They keep the snake populations down.

I’m with you. I know the chances of anything happening are slim, but it just creeps me out.

Don't let the faux toughies on this board try and convince you different.

As a kid yeah you overlook a lot of stuff. An adult (should) know better.

But I gotta say, the whole "flesh eating bacteria" thing gives me pause before I get in any water nowadays.

Yeah for real. I always make sure I don’t have any open cuts or wounds before I get in for that same reason. A normal person with a non-weakened immune system has nothing to worry about.

I love being on a boat, but I just feel nervous when I swim in a chocolate milk colored water with snakes and fish and other shite all under me

I hated it when I lived down South. Not much of a problem now.

I'm freaked out by muddy water.

This. If you are a healthy individual, you could probably swim in a sewer pond and be ok. Now if I had a cut I would probably at least put some of the liquid band-aid stuff on it first before diving in.
