National Geographic link
It's a picture link with a lot of during and after photos of Katie and her family, doctors, surgeries, the donor, the donor's grandmother, etc.
The story lies in the photos and some video.

quote:

This story is difficult to look at. Yet we are asking you to go on the remarkable journey of how a young woman received a face transplant because it reveals something profound about our humanity. Katie Stubblefield lost her face when she was 18. When she was 21, doctors at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio gave her a new one.

Warning: some of the photos may be disturbing to a few people

Yes, it is. It's not that disturbing, unless photos of surgeries, etc. bother you. There also is an "after some surgeries, but before the transplant" photo of her I didn't include.

Why post the exact same picture side-by-side? Where's the after pic?

That second picture looks rough until you click that link and realize that’s her post-makeover photo.

On March 25, 2014, distraught, she shot herself with a rifle, taking most of her face.

I am not trying to be critical, but what was the reason for performing a face transplant for a person that is suicidal?

I'd assume because it is an opportunity for doctors to perform an experimental surgery and perfect a procedure that has been performed a grand total of like 3 times in the entire history of mankind

They never really explained in the article why the face swells so much. Any of the resident OT physicians can give some insight?

besides the scientific miracle, the Department of defense funded it for research for obvious reasons.

I hope she recovers and has a fulfilling life and can counsel young folks to not do stupid shite that is a permanent solution to a temporary problem.

and I hope she can appreciate the US department of defense.
