I get a picture about once a year and handwritten letters 3 or 4 times a year, updating me on his life. Compassion has a program where you can arrange to visit them

We daughter and I are St. Jude Heroes and are currently fundraising -- I'd be more than happy to email or post here the link to her fundraising page. It's a direct donation to St. Jude but goes towards her goal.

Good for you for being thoughtful & generous!

Make sure it's the local shelter and not the ASPCA. The latter has a lot of overhead.

Read a story today about a 13-year-old from PA who's charged with first degree murder after he shot his younger brother in the head. The family has set up a GoFundMe for... reasons?

I would suggest giving your money to anyone but them. Even the SPLC would be better.

I like to buy canned and boxed goods for the local food bank. Or if I hear about someone at work or friend of a friend. Maybe lost job, major health issue, house burned down - I gladly donate money to them. I know and understand that major charities have administrative costs, but it still irks me a bit to send $100 to a charity, knowing that only $10 actually goes to the person in need.

Local food bank or Church parish meal ministry.
Lately I have been buying an extra loaf of bread and a big jar of peanut butter every week at the grocery and putting it in the box at my church.

We have a box in the narthex and another one outside on the corner that they fill every day in conjunction with another program in the neighborhood. Usually the outdoor box is ready to eat stuff so they don't have to actually cook or warm it.

St.Judes. But wherever you decide, ask what percentage of your money goes to administrative costs & how much to the kids or to the intended beneficiaries. And you have the right to ask for that statement in writing. As a bad example, check out the Red Cross. WAY to much of donated monies goes to administrative costs. WAY too much. St. Jude is hard to beat. Those commercials are not fake.

My cousin is a spokesperson for them. They work very closely with the communities the children are in to make sure they are involved, the kids and families have to meet certain requirements. If there are any issues they will notify you so you can choose another child.

I just volunteer and see it in person if I want to do something charitable

Too many scams going on with too many people making all kinds of money to just blindly give money in an envelope away
