I’ve been a hobby welder for about a decade. Recently bought an engine drive welder to build a shed on my property. I’ve picked up a couple of jobs fixing other peoples screw ups simply because I had the welder on my truck at the time. This last weekend I fixed a gate at a golf course. I don’t want to weld as a profession but I really enjoy fabrication and making things work so it’s nice to do it passively. I do a lot of bartering with welding also since money isn’t my primary reason for welding. A 10 minute job can land you $100-200 pretty easy though depending on what it is.
The downside to welding as a side gig is the equipment costs. But I’ve been able to save the equipment costs by doing my own work around my property. The pipe fence around my property alone almost justified the engine drive welder but I also have a mobile plasma setup and probably $2000 in random welding/metal working tools as well. Also, when you’re working on other peoples screw ups you sometimes open a can of worms that makes a simple job a little more complicated.

I play guitar at small bars around south Louisiana. Tonight and tomorrow night I’ll be at Sullivans steakhouse. If anyone would like to stop by and watch.

I just put all my "side hustle" energy into my one actual job and it's been very lucrative for me.

(Insert boos and hisses here)
Pre-covid I was making 6 figures pre-tax. Now I’m lucky if I make 20% of that.

I have a small clearing business. It keeps me busy and will be something I can do when I retire in a few years. It’s not something I do a lot but word of mouth keeps my equipment working.
I have an excavator and a bulldozer so we can get a good bit done. Last year with the dry weather I was busier than I wanted to be . It’s fun because my 14 year old son helps me and makes enough money to keep him happy.

I try to find out where Antique Tiger is going to be at estate sales, then secretly buy up all the junk myself. So far, I have 6 storage units full of stuff. Jokes on him!

Rouxdee, can I ask where you are located? I love old wood planes.

I used to make a decent swath of cash riding pedicabs in the French Quarter and surrounding areas. Most days I could do construction and then go in at night and ride. Depending on the night one could make a lot of money and get some strange cat.
The best pedicabbers (or the female ones) can clear 6figures easily. Plus it’s the best exercise possible. Americans are fat and lazy, so the workout is real. I had 3 big gals back there, possibly 1200 lbs of human fat and bone, twerking to some Juvenile I had blasting on speaker. In the summer. Sweating balls and banging out quad strength.
Working at night in the quarter is not for the faint of heart.
I don’t live in Nola anymore, so my new “side hustle” idea is a taco venture in a small town in Acadiana.

Downside: it costs about $1000-1200 to get your notary.
So it takes over a year to see ROI?
No thanks

Buy yourself a pressure washer. Go drive around a neighborhood and identify 15-20 houses that need their driveways pressure washed. Send individual complaint letters about these houses to their HOA. Post signs at the entrances and exits of the neighborhood for your pressure washing business. Sit back and wait for your phone to ring. Once business slows down a bit, repeat this process for the neighborhood next to it.

Selling on Amazon, eBay, and Walmart. Right now I am selling about $40K per month worth of stuff and growing. Just started it last August so still a ways to go but it has the potential to be way more than a side gig.
