Of course there are exceptions to this rule, but by and large this is accurate.
Staying in shape is one thing. Constantly working out and making sure everyone knows how much you work out or striving for attention because you work out is what makes you a weak person, looking for acceptance in a world where you don't know what else to do.

Is this the thread where fatties try to feel better about themselves?

Why not strive for both - although as my career has progressed I hit the weights less and less religiously

The two are merging to some extent.
You certainly see fewer overweight but powerful/successful people now than you did in decades past. Now, that's more about general fitness than being a gym rat, and I think that breed of CEO is probably more likely to be a triathlete than excessively muscular, but it is changing.

I don't know about feeling out of control to guide my own path, but I like to workout for the "you never know".
You never know when:
you have to run away from something, beat some arse, be a great lover, etc.

careful, success in some ares is not intelligence
being CEO or Senator is less about intelligence than it is about knowing people.(see Henry Waxman)
Real intelligent people choose more analytical fields and aren't as weak minded to strive for "status"...the same fear that muscle bound guys have is the same that makes people strive for success status. It's something that they feel they "need" to be someone. It's not a great attribute, no matter how many sub-100 IQ's look up to it.
The guy who wants to show people on facebook that he's skiing in Chile and traipsing the jungles of Bali, may work extra long hours to save up for the trips. And others may be envious of his adventures, but the motivation to get photos to post to make other people be envious of you, is the saddest of sads.

I like working out. I'd be too stressed without it. I like being strong. There's nothing wrong with having a strong mind and body.

How much do you have to earn to be considered a successful white guy, and how does that compare to a minority's?
You are trying way to hard.
That or a really muscular poor black guy fricked your wife.

So would the people who constantly post on fb or other social media about being at the gym and quotes like, "The pump is my drug" daily be grouped into this category? Asking for a friend....

Did it really take a study to figure this out?

Wrong, being a body builder takes strong will power.

I was born this way. I never worked out but I'm solid muscle
