Study participants infected with hookworms lose weight and insulin resistance

TL;DR people on verge of getting type 2 diabetes were infected with hookworms and they worked so well that all but one of the participants wanted to remain infected after the 2 year study was complete.

Fasting glucose and insulin resistance were lowered in both hookworm-treated groups at 1 year, and body mass was reduced after L3-20 treatment at 2 years. This study suggests hookworm infection is safe in people at risk of type 2 diabetes and associated with improved insulin resistance, warranting further exploration of the benefits of hookworms on metabolic health.
...We noted modest reductions in body mass and BMI in the L3-20 group; ...Bar one, all hookworm-treated participants that completed the study opted to retain their worms, and the sole person who dewormed did so in preparation for a medical procedure.

Maybe being infected with worms is our natural state and we need them to be healthy.

Imagine if people got off their fat arse and lifted weights. Society would be much more pleasurable. No busted cans of biscuits at the beach

The fat arse US population, as a whole, would rather be infected with hook worms than exercise and limit caloric intake. If given the choice, I believe that the majority would choose the hook worms.

Pretty interesting. We have been evolving over the past several hundred thousand years... only the past hundred have we been worm free with all the carbs we can eat. Makes sense we were built for parasites.

Curly and the stooges were ahead of their time.

There is a really interesting Radiolab about parasites. One of the segments is about a guy who had awful, debilitating allergy, and asthma issues. He infected himself with hookworms and it completely changed his life, cured him of his allergy and asthma problems. He then started a business selling hookworms medically. And then, of course, the FDA shut him down, and he was forced to take his operation outside the states.

The real issue is that the FDA allows food manufacturers to drench so much of what we consume in HFCS (high-fructose corn syrup). NIH study from 2015
quote:
Although not all studies come to exactly the same conclusion, sufficient evidence has accumulated over the last 10 years to indicate that fructose, in certain concentrations and mainly in males has a significant impact on brain and cognitive functions. On the one hand, fructose intake affects appetite control by increasing ghrelin serum levels and hypothalamic CB1 mRNA, and decreasing the activation of brain satiety centers. On the other hand, it leads to brain insulin resistance, impaired learning and memory, and reduced neurogenesis.
Ghrelin is thought to play a role in fostering the need to begin meals (ie; hunger pangs) as the ghrelin levels in the blood rise just before eating and when fasting, with the timing of these rises being affected by our normal meal routine.
We like to point to Europe as being more fit, but guess what most European countries limit in their food and beverage production? HFCS.

That's as descriptive as the two co-workers talking about their night at a strip club and the one girl "looking like she sat on a gravel road"

All I know, is if you come near my sanitary bubble with your worms and your moops, you are going to get worked.

I've been on the all hookworm diet for years now and still can't seem to lose weight. How many am I supposed to eat?
