Streetcars in New Orleans

Do people living in New Orleans actually use the street cars in their daily commute or is it mostly a tourist thing?

There are people that use them to commute, but its also a huge amount of tourists.

I have not been on a street car since I was in elementary school as far as I can recall.

Only time I've been on a street car in New Orleans was as a kid or in wedding photos.

Mostly less financially able ppl ride them on the regular. However, more locals will ride them for big events in the quarter/riverfront/uptown areas when it’s easier to park and ride down than it is to park around those places

Yes some people use them for work commutes, but they have to leave likely an hour earlier than if they used a car. The timing of them is unreliable, and they will pass you if they are full.

Historically, they were designed as a full network to get you all across the city.

How reliable are the streetcars nowadays? Do they tend to run on a pretty regular schedule or is catching one at a given stop hit or miss?

Out of curiosity, I google-map-directioned from St Charles & S Carrollton to Canal & Carondelet, which is the length of the St Charles line minus the lake-to-river stretch on Carrolton.

Streetcar 44 mins
Driving 20 mins
Biking 33 mins (bike directions estimate biking at 10mph, which is on the slow side)

5 miles in 44 minutes. Yikes.

They are supposed to come by every 15 minutes, but they often end up bunching up if the lead car is delayed and it will take 30+ minutes until the next one comes.

This is what likely prevents more people from using them as reliable transportation, especially to get to/from work.

I would guess that if they ran like clockwork every 10-15 minutes and were reliable, more people would be happy to use them for their work commute.

RTA has an app which shows live location of the streetcars which helps, otherwise it can be hit and miss. When I lived upt I would take it to the quarter on the weekends and now I will use the canal st line for Saints games some times.

I used it a couple years ago when I went to Tulane. My apartment and the architecture school were a block from the line, so it was pretty convenient. Extremely unreliable on Fridays, though.

I rode the streetcar everyday when in high school. S. Carrollton and Claiborne to De la Salle.

I see mostly tourists on them day to day. When I lived uptown on the line I never took it because it was a time issue. It was faster for me to drive, bike or even run.
