Right - a brisk walk of 5 miles is about an hour 15. Slow walk, 90 to 100 minutes.
So, you're only going twice as fast as a slow walk on a street car. You save the sweat and, obviously, if you're hauling anything of significance. But, from a pure speed and convenience standpoint, it's, "Meh." I guess if I lived on S. Carrollton and worked along the line, it would be nice.

There are some children who ride the streetcar rather than a school bus. ( new orleans, for some reason, did not have many school buses and kids were given passes to ride public buses instead.)
They provide us with a service, look nice, attract tourists and are so much a part of nola. The St Charles line of the streetcars is the longest continuously running streetcar line in the world.
Also, the poboy sandwich was created for the streetcar workers when the went on a huge strike. The citizens sided with the streetcar workers and shops created an inexpensive but delicious meaty sandwich to help the 'poor boys' on strike who were struggling financially. The strike eventually ended but the poboy sandwich lives on

I live on the street car line, it’s quicker to just ride my bike instead

I used to ride the streetcar every day to get to high school.
I rode the St. Charles line last week with out of town relatives. It was about 75% tourists and the rest was local working people. Very crowded. I enjoy the ride when it's not crowded.

The streetcar is the electric scooter of the 19th century.

I did for a summer in law school when I liked by Audubon Park and my job was off Poydras. It took longer than driving but I enjoyed it, I found it relaxing.
