Depends on the line:
St. Charles line ---- probably 70% tourist, 30% locals
Canal Line (City Park & Cemeteries) ---- RTA says its 80%-90% locals which is easily believable since it connects with the ferry, every bus route in the system, and provides a connection to 2 or 3 JET buses at the cemeteries
Riverfront line ---- 90% tourist
Loyola/Rampart line (2 newest lines) ----- doesn't matter, no one rides this line anyway
Sometimes the streetcars work awesome, other times you can out walk them.

How reliable are the streetcars nowadays? Do they tend to run on a pretty regular schedule or is catching one at a given stop hit or miss?
Better than they have been, they are tracked and there is an app that sometimes works that shows where the next one is.
But the problem is that they don't have traffic priority. And in some areas, they don't have a dedicated lane, either. So if traffic is heavy, they tend to get out of whack.
It's not a reliable method of transportation if you need to be somewhere at a particular time, unless you leave way, way early.
However, the parking situation downtown has gotten so bad and so expensive, that a lot of people are starting to use them because they can't afford to park downtown (unlike other cities, many companies downtown here won't pay for their employees parking, especially for rank and file employees).

I've never had a job that was in Orleans Parish, but my dad definitely rode the streetcar to work when he did.

When I lived Uptown I would use it occasionally to get Downtown. But, it's not a good mode of transportation if you are on a time schedule. We eventually just started biking, and it was much more convenient.

A lot of locals use them. Especially the people that work in the cities restaurants.

I live downtown; every couple of months I take one to run an errand uptown.

Development of the South Market district and other projects in the warehouse district and CBD are good for the City overall, however the drawback is a significant reduction in public parking spaces and more competition for the existing spots.
RTA is doing some good things and should definitely focus on streetcars and other transit to get people in/out of the core of the city more effectively. There is actually a study right now on possibly redesigning the bus network -- New Links NOLA

Pretty much nailed it. Canal is definitely the most efficient one, which is good because it’s the one most locals use. Great for Saints games, FQF, anything else going on downtown.
St Charles would be so much better if they spaced out the stops. No need for a streetcar stop every two blocks.
Rampart is a clusterfrick. The fact they spent the amount of money they did to put that line and not give it a dedicated lane is mind-numbing.

A lot of people who work in the CBD use them on a daily basis. Just take a drive down Saint Charles during rush hour. Of course a lot of tourists do as well.

Yup; i live in Lakeview and when the weather is good, on occasion, I'll walk down Canal and ride it into work downtown.

When I lived downtown, I used them regularly to get uptown.

I used it fairly often, especially when I wasn't in a rush — cheap and convenient mode of transportation.

Yes, they are.
Part of it is we need a truly regional system - in the interest of transit, it's time to either merge or seriously partnership between RTA, JETS, and St Bernard Transit. However, Jeff and St Bernard will never give up control.
If we truly had a regional transit network, more people would use it, which would help the parking situation. In addition, more workers would be willing to live in the burbs because they could still take transit to get to work - especially lower income workers - that would help with housing affordability as well.

I think St Charles also struggles because downtown it lane-shares, as well as so many people blocking it making u-turns on St Charles, and only having 1 or two lanes to turn into. that slows down U-turns.
It would suck for drivers, but restricting u-turns or left turns to only a few intersections would speed up the streetcar

I've been back here for 7 years and I have ridden the streetcar for 1 day - that was for a St. Charles Avenue bar crawl.
I do know a few people who use it regularly that live close to St. Charles and have offices right off the line in the CBD, but I just don't wanna sweat my arse off in a slow metal box everyday.

The schedule really gets thrown off when the driver parks the street car outside of Gracious Bakery at 6th and St. Charles so she can go shite and get a pastry.

I have a great aunt in New Orleans that uses them all the time. She doesn’t have a drivers license so she rely on those to get to places

When I lived Uptown, I took it Downtown more often than not, but I never, ever took it from May to the end of August.
By the time I walked the 7 blocks to the line, hopped on, and sat in that thing for 30+ minutes, I'd have to take another shower.
Great for mid-March Street Car Bar Crawls, though.

I took the streetcar to go to school every day.
