Getting fire marshal inspection the other day, I noticed the inspector has a gun in a holster on their belt. It occurred to me that it’s always been that way for as far back as I can remember. I never understood why though.

You ever seen someone react when you tell them you built the entire building wrong and have to start over?

Probably a member of law enforcement to a degree that can arrest you.

They investigate arson. Arson is a criminal offense. Charging someone with a criminal offense makes them a law enforcement officer. Police carry guns.

When a building goes over occupancy they shoot people until the number drops to a safe level.

They have arrest powers and are POST certified, however they only enforce fire code and not the only blanket of state laws. Main duties are building inspection, occupancy permits, amusement ride inspections, and of course arson/fire investigations.

I've seen ATC inspectors show up carrying guns as well.

Seems a bit over the top, but I guess you never know when someone is going to react poorly to shutting their bar down.

If they use the gun correctly no cuffs are needed.

Don’t recall saying I had a problem with it. Just put the question out there cause I was curious.

I've wondered that too. They used to come into my place of work for inspection and I always thought someone was getting arrested. What a sigh of relief to hear that he was just the fire marshal.

IIRC it Started under Butch Browning with the blessing of Mike Edmonson. POST certification and law enforcement commission gave each Fire Marshall a $500 month raise with the eligibility to receive state pay for law enforcement officers. It was simply a money ploy.
