They are part of law enforcement. A few years back in Texas someone pulled a gun on a Fire Marshall, and he was dispatched quickly.

I work with the State Fire Marshals somewhat regularly. I was told it's for arson purposes.

If you are talking about state supplemental pay that is incorrect. No state employee is allowed to get supplemental pay(fire Marshall, DPS, State trooper, WLF, Exc.). If you are talking about some magical $500 a raise for being an officer that is also incorrect.

Wasn't there an issue a couple of years ago with the Fire Marshall asking for funding to get SWAT style equipment and weapons?

They might have to shoot a dog. Poodles (actually most little yappy dogs) hate firemen.
