A mocking bird is pound for pound the most ferocious bird on the planet. To kill one is a sin. Pretty sure it’s the most represented state bird in the lower 48.

The state bird of Alabama is the Yellowhammer. I'd prefer the Golden Eagle, but a Yellowhammer is a pretty cool looking bird.

The state bird for Alabama should have been the Snipe.

We always had thrashers in my yard growing up (I grew up in GA). I have them in my yard in MS too.

Are these even common in Alabama?
Our state bird should be the phoebe. I've got plenty of them around me.

The Yellowhammer does live in Alabama. They are related to woodpeckers.

Look up Pelican and Eagle and see what you get. Pelican will f@ck up and eagle trying to hunt fish in the same area.

The videos at my feeder would give that title to the wren.

I would add blue jays to the list of assholes of the sky. They are territorial and very aggressive. I have a bird bath in my backyard that they believe is their own personal bath that’s not to be used by other birds.

ETA: And according to the internet they also raid other birds’ nests for eggs and young birds. Definitely assholes.

Georgia is the Brown Thrasher. I have lived in Georgia for most of my life in various parts of the state and don’t ever recall seeing one. Aside from Turkey Vultures and Crows, I have seen Robins and Blue Jays and Barn Swallows more than any other over 55 years. But they went with Brown Thrasher for some reason.

I would of thought the Georgia state bird was a Falcon.

Minnesota's state bird most reflects the population of the state. It's the common loon.

The noble pelican that pierces its own breast in order to feed its young. Pretty badass. I'm down with the Pels.

The white makes its blood, the same blood it is feeding its chicks, stand out better.

They are all over the place, but they are more elusive and don't like spending much time in the open. They don't come to feeders. You'll usually hear them before you see them. They are also a "mocking" bird and will cycle through other bird calls just for fun. You may think it's a mocking bird you are hearing from a thicket, but it's probably a brown thrasher.

Texas has the Mockingbird - I respect them in some ways (Mimicking Skills, Bravery).. that said, they're basically the biggest jackasses in the bird world. I'm not so sure I like the choice.

So they have the famous Texan false bravado?

Formerly known as the yellow-shafted northern flicker.

I've never heard them called yellowhammer but can see why you would.

I admire their tenacity. But Florida should have something like the Blue Heron, Sandhill crane or even Ibis as the state bird.
