The name "Yellowhammer" comes from a nickname given to Confederate cavalry soldiers from Huntsville during the Civil War due to their yellow-trimmed uniforms, which looked like the bird's yellow underwings.

I think ours is the cardinal. Im not even certain though. I've never cared what our or any other states bird or flower was. Bah humbug

Arkansas is also the mockingbird. Apparently a lot of southern states didn’t look around at their neighbors before deciding this.

Texas has the Mockingbird - I respect them in some ways (Mimicking Skills, Bravery).. that said, they're basically the biggest jackasses in the bird world. I'm not so sure I like the choice.

Big hawk in my backyard last week showing true dominance over your Mockingbird.

We need a new flag. That bird and the baby birds are a representation of tyranny and control by our state government. Our leaders want us to be the baby birds who have to feed off them (the momma bird).

Good trivia question:

What State bird has another State in the name of the bird?

Utah - California Gull

Interesting history behind it.

Carolina Wren. We actually used to be the mockingbird as well but changed it 100 years ago.

As a bird watcher. I love the mocking bird. They are the assholes of the sky.

Yes they are brave. They don’t take no shite. Watching them bully a Crow is one of my favorite moments in nature.

They are the Ed Hardy of the bird world.

Georgia is the Brown Thrasher. I have lived in Georgia for most of my life in various parts of the state and don’t ever recall seeing one. Aside from Turkey Vultures and Crows, I have seen Robins and Blue Jays and Barn Swallows more than any other over 55 years. But they went with Brown Thrasher for some reason.

Why is a pelican "pussified"?

Just look at it! It's like like the dump truck of birds. Not majestic or fear inducing. Shitty choice.

They look pretty majestic as they cruise just above the water. Fear inducing? Besides raptors, which birds are fear inducing?
