In Houston you spend more on property tax than we do on private schools
Please note there is no state income tax in TX. No state income and higher property taxes is a wash. Then you get the added benefit of having amazing schools

It's not the schools or their funding that's the problem. You have parents that look at schools as nothing more than daycare centers and don't care about their kid's education. You can build 100 state of the art schools in BR and you'd have the same result. The solution to this problem starts at home and no amount of public funding can fix that.

Hey, if I'd ever known her to be a nice pleasant person to be around, I'd be up in here carrying water for her.
She is NOT a nice pleasant person.

I grew up in what would be St George and was interested in living there long term but the costs of private schooling for one kid, let alone three, was so outrageous that it was a nonstarter.
Hence moving to Zachary.
I support the St George movement because even if my kids don’t end up attending those schools, there may be a shot of one or more of them living there and sending their kids there if my family doesn’t pass on first.

Clark,
The property tax in our area in Houston is relatively low compared to others. But our total property tax including MUD is $4,200 per year. Of the three bills that make up the 4,200. $1,959 is for the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD -a very good school district.
Property tax in EBR for a 200K home is $1,500/ yr? Difference of $2,700. That may seem like a lot at first, but no need to send kids to private schools and spend approximately 10K.
For shits and giggles, for our salary if we paid state income tax in Louisiana that would be $7,300 in state income tax that we are saving.
7,300-2,700 =$4,600 net gain and have amazing schools
In our case we certainly come out several thousand ahead with higher property taxes and no state income tax vs. paying a smaller property tax and state income tax. Then you get the added benefit of fantastic schools.
LOUISIANA: Salary100,000.00 USD
Federal Income Tax- 15,409.50 USD
State Income Tax- 3,555.43 USD
Social Security- 6,200.00 USD
Medicare Tax- 1,450.00 USD
Total Tax- 26,614.93 USD
Net Pay*73,385.07 USD
TEXAS Salary100,000.00 USD
Federal Income Tax- 15,409.50 USD
Social Security- 6,200.00 USD
Medicare Tax- 1,450.00 USD
Total Tax- 23,059.50 USD
Net Pay*76,940.50 USD
Then you factor in cheaper home insurance, car insurance, (about 1/2 what it cost in Louisiana) electric, gas, water, and basically everything you buy. Although this may not apply to everyone, but in the burbs of Houston, yes. We save between $50-$100 each month alone in electric because of deregulation. Its a pain to shop around every year for the 64 companies and 100's of plans but you can get very cheap electric.
Please note a 400K house in the suburbs of Houston is probably larger and nicer than a 400K home in EBR.

I 100% agree with you, and i'm in the same boat as you, but that's not the majority way of thinking in southern Louisiana. My kid has been at a catholic elementary school for 3 years now and we have not once stepped foot in the church. I would much rather they do just about anything than have a religion class everyday. I can promise you i'm in the vast minority way of thinking when it comes to the other parents in his grade. They ask all the time why we never go to church.

I just wanna know what st George is breaking away from. All of the together Baton Rouge yard signs (all 5 of them) say “say no to the break away”
Uh bitch. Why do you have to use outright lies and scare tactics? Why is your whole catchphrase is a fricking lie?
How can you break away from a city you have never been a part of? I just wish one person could answer this question instead of backpedaling and stumbling over their words while looking for an out

They don’t want to address that the city limits of Baton Rouge are fricked and have been for about 40-50 years due to court interpretations that annexing homes instead of businesses is a dilution of minority votership.
As a result you have a lot of places technically considered in the city but outside the city limits.
My personal favorite version of it was state offices considered the “Baton Rouge region” of a state agency was not allowed off on Inauguration Day on the grounds that it is not in the city of Baton Rouge.
While technically true, having to explain how the Baton Rouge field office isn’t in Baton Rouge is a nice bit of doublethink exposing this insanity.

The solution to this problem starts at home and no amount of public funding can fix that.

But st George, as it is right now, isn’t breaking away from the school system. Yet.
So their catchphrase is still a lie.

I'm within St George limits and signed my petition. I can always vote no but I want it decided through voting. Not by some admins who should be serving law. Is this women saying that they need to make sure those signatures are by registered voters? Is it going to be he said/she said

Larger yes, but not nicer. I have had this conversation with many realtors and they all say that the reason that houses are more expensive in Louisiana is for 2 major reasons. 1. property is more expensive. 2. The finishes in Louisiana houses are much nicer than in Texas, this is a function because with land being more expensive people demand more quality per squarefoot. Things like large swaths of carpet, lack of crowne molding, tile counter tops, black appliances, and so on make houses in Texas much cheaper to build.
Property is more expensive in Louisiana because people are ok traveling greater distances to work than in Louisiana. which is why Houston sprawls forever.

Isn't the whole purpose is to get an ISD? That is what was explained to me as I was walking into Wal-Mart the first time around. In fact no mention of St. George was ever made. I was asked to sign a petition for better schools. No attempt was made to verify I lived in the proper St. George area. I don't. But I am for better schools, so I signed.

When you get in that secret ballot and no one knows which way you vote, a lot of people that won't sign the petition are going to vote yes. This isn't only in this case but in almost every case like this one weather it be a recall or whatever.
the opponents know this and are very worried.

This is a great post. Well written and your point is very fleshed out.
And I agree with your point, hence why moving back home to BR (from North Houston) would never be an option for me and my wife.
But i'm not sure I agree with this last statement. $400k home in BR would get you a lot, as far as the actual house goes. In Houston, you just bought yourself a standard bland 2 story cookie cutter in a gated neighborhood (maybe). Of course that would also probably put you in a good school district as well.
I guess it depends on what you want.
