My opinion: Snobbish elitist players make it difficult for new players to learn the game by bitching about how long it takes new players to move from hole to hole, as well as bitching about course etiquette that many new people may not know.

Golf is indeed dying. Fewer and fewer young people are interested in the game.

Question is why and how does the golf industry plan to change that?

Because I can get more business done in my robe and pajamas watching netflix and being home with my family than kissing arse for half a day with some old coot.

It's a relatively expensive, time-consuming, difficult sport at a time when lots of marginal/new players have less money, time, and patience. I enjoy Golf, but play much much less than I used to (which wasn't much).

The real questions should be (1) how one phenomenal golfer near-single handedly led to such an explosion in its popularity, and (2) why "oldtimers" and "real golfers" seem to resent him.

The pros sure as hell don't resent the size of those post-Tiger checks.

Main reason I have seen in the last 5 years...just because you can play a 5 hour round, doesn't mean you should!

Yep. More people are shucking off their non-conscious micro aggressions and becoming aware that golf is an extension of the white European male culture responsible for subjugating, oppressing, raping and exploiting the people of color all over the world for the past 1,000 years.

The VIEWERSHIP of prof. golf is dying because Tiger's quiet levels of success. Also, golf is not exactly the most socioeconomically friendly sport in the world. I really have no idea what the stats or on playing golf are vs. 10 years ago. Might be interesting to know. You probably should have found info like that to put in your OP.

And golf isn't dying, it's just returning from what Tiger did to the game. It'll settle somewhere in between and fans/players will be better off.

Also, to be consistently DECENT at golf, one has to devote an incredible amount of time/effort beyond just a Saturday round with your bros. Hours upon hours monthly have to be spent around a chipping/putting green as well as the range. This is why when you meet someone who consistently shoots in the low 80s or especially high 70s, they do not have ANY other hobbies. Golf is all they can do. Because of the cost and time commitment to be good at it. And the younger generation's attention span doesn't lend itself to that kind of thing either. People are all about "the experience" now and want to try everything. Problem with that way of thinking is that you never get good at something or master anything.

I wouldn't say it is dying, it is just coming off a bubble and back down to a normal level that golf has always been at. Golf courses and manufacturers exploded for a while and now it is getting whittled down to where it was before. The bubble popped is all.

This generation is largely underemployed and dirt poor. Picking up new hobbies that require expensive equipment is kind of a stretch.

That said, I don't think Golf is dying. I think the temporary spike in popularity is slowing down.

And hitting said ball can be frustrating and difficult as frick.

Been playing for 20 years and still get mad, but always come back.

It's funny you bring this up because I was talking to the local pro shop owner and he told me that golf has lost 30 million golfers in the past 6 years or so. He claims golf lost an entire generation due to other sports like gay arse soccer.
