I don't buy that golf is any more expensive or time consuming than any other hobby out there. The cost of fishing or hunting is steep too when you figure in rods, reels, boat (or guide) etc. Also, a fishing trip or sitting in a deer stand takes at least 4hrs as well.

I think the game has leveled out and is no longer expanding is because of rules and etiquette. Today's genneration wants to push boundaries more than ever and don't want to be told what they can and can't do. People would want more of a happy Gilmore style game than a traditional setting.

Golf can be viewed as a retirement sport. It's time consuming and people that are retired have the time to play. More and more workers are extending their careers a few years to catch up, so less people are out on the golf course.

I also think a small sector of the golfers have joined the crossfit cult.

Society has become fast paced, and unless you're playing on a empty course with you or someone else, it's usually a 4-5 hour round.

Well dying is a dramatic term, but before tiger it was "dead" to probably 85% of the American public. If it returns to that, some might call it a dead. Sure certain enthusiests and fans may be better off, but when prize money is cut in half and no one is offering golfers seven digits to endorse shite, calling them better off is pretty tough sell.

Jordan Spieth and the 25 majors he is going to win over the next 20 years will keep the prize money up.

spinoff: Why is game of Golf dying? What is the cause? it just takes too long b/c idiots think they're PGA players and are attempting to read greens like it's sunday at augusta and most of them have no idea what they're even looking at.. i love golf but hate golfers.. there's no reason for a round to take more than 3 hours.. if your 4some is averaging more than 10 mins a hole, you need to be beaten with a tire iron*..

Yup. This plus the dudes who shank a tee shot and look for their ball in 3 ft. high weeds for what seems like an eternity. Sorry you lost your proV1. Buy balls that you can afford to say "welp, frick it. That one is as good as gone".

So yeah, basically just adding to the inconsiderate golfer reason. I seem to get behind a group every time I play.

Walking through sporting goods stores like Dicks or Academy, get to the golfing section and out front on display is the newest greatest best ever $500 drivers. People see that and say to themselves " $500 for one friggin club!!?" And it intimidates/scares the hell out of them. The sport is too damn expensive and it doesn't help that is marketed that way also. Nothing about golf makes it seem accessible to anyone and everyone.

1. Time: Most people have obligations to work and family that leave very little time for an activity that takes several hours each time. Has hunting suffered from this?

2. Money: Golf is an expensive hobby. Even if you are frugal, club membership or green fees are at least 100 dollars a month or more. Equipment is expensive.

3. Difficulty: The game is not easy to learn and maintaining skills requires practice. Most people, if they are honest, cannot break 90 even on a 6,000 yard course.

4. Marraige has changed from men working M-F while women stay home.
In those days, dad went to the club for his Saturday round and dinner was ready when he got home. Now, mom works too. Kids used to organize their own activities. Now it is all travel sports, rec sports leagues and lessons. It is hard to choose golf over family when your wife is working 40 a week too.

Full disclosure, I am semi-retired and now play at least 3 18 hole rounds most weeks and hit the range or putting green often. When I worked full time, before kids, I played several times a week after work. When kids came, I played infrequently and almost quit altogether.

Is it really that expensive? I mean I bought some Kmart $80 clubs and I can find golfnow deals here in AZ (prime golf country ) for like $20 for 18 holes a cart and a beer at a pretty nice course.

That's like anything though for the latest and greatest model of equipment. It doesn't matter if it's golf, rods, gun, cars whatever it's going to be expensive because it's the latest technology.

It's really just a cultural thing as to why it's losing its luster. I think you'll start to see more music in carts or mediums to entertain people in between shots/holes. Sad but people need constant stimulation and entertainment.

Well my problem is you have to have three friends to play and I don't even like three people.
