I assume they're all Dems, so I don't see how their lack of support is relevant. Laws can be passed without them.

I realize that’s how taxes work. I was just stating this impacts the lower to middle income people much more so than “upper class” as the majority of their taxes are already at 6%

Weren't we told it was the Republicans who were obstructionists.
The Black Caucus would do their constituency a lot of good if they went after the Film lobbyists and the Nursing Home lobbyists instead of the Middle Class.

Never mind the fact that the federal tax cuts in 2018 will result in higher state income tax receipts by itself.
Lowering the federal income tax means you'll take a lower income tax deduction on presumably the same or higher AGI, resulting in higher taxable income for the state. A married couple with AGI of $120k will already pay nearly $200 more in state taxes in 2018 than they did in 2017, assuming no changes to state tax brackets.

The proposed tax bracket would look like:
2% - First $12,500
4% - Next $12,500 (up to $25,000)
6% - Earnings beyond $25,000
Jesus some of you are stupid.
frick the Black Caucus, they're all completely illiterate morons, but reread this bracket before you comment.

Is the black caucus as big as some people claim, or is that just a myth made up by its members?

Wrong, it would affect anyone above $12.5k. $12.5k to $25k would pay an additional 2% there also.
Huh?
$12,500 to $25k would pay 4% marginal rates under the current and proposed changes. $25k+ is where the changes would be felt.

Lots of guys who pass up raises because they don't want to be in a higher tax bracket in this thread.

Well, I only support it if the Mestizo Indian Caucus is on board......
Posted on 2/26/18 at 12:19 pm to slackster
Yes, that was the dumbest I have felt in a while... oh well, never too old to learn something new.

I think some edits by the OP may have thrown people off

Thank you.
It amazing how many people have no idea how tax brackets work. I can't even count how many times I've heard people say that they want to make less money, so that they don't get into a higher tax bracket.
Posted on 2/26/18 at 12:23 pm to Harry Caray
I have true faith that the state will spend the new funds with the utmost respect and mindfulness.

It seemed to make sense when I responded, but perhaps you're right.

Special session update: the black caucus has issued an ultimatum to increase income tax by compressing tax brackets or they won’t vote for any bill. In other words, they are blowing everything up. #lalege
I hope they stick to this. I don't think even the RINO's will be able to swallow this.
I would like to think they would use the regular session for spending reforms instead, but that's wishful thinking.
They will use finance magic to tide the state over for a couple of months and return for another special session to complete their tax hikes after the regular session.
