65 lbs, bulldog mix, loves to run and cut. This is how she tore it.

Vet wants to do surgery, install plate. $3000 for everything.

I'm in Gulf Breeze, FL Anyone know if LSU Vet school would be much cheaper because of students operating on her?

Won't be cheaper. No sense in driving 4 hours to pay the same or more unless it's a super specialized surgery.

Doing this tomorrow. Same pet had the other ACL 2 years ago. Cost me about $1200 plus meds. Not sure about this time.

Went through this last November. All is well now, but man oh man the recovery period was a bitch (no pun intended).

Just make sure you call all the specialists/vets in your area. I ended up finding one in New Orleans that was about 1/2 the price of everyone else. Ended up being around 2k for everything.

Pre-op, surgery, imaging, follow up visits, arthritis shots, and cold laser treatment

Students wouldnt be doing surgery. They would be monitoring vitals and anesthesia. A senior resident and maybe an attending would be doing the surgery.

It likely wont be cheaper either. Vet schools tend to be expensive. If your guy is reputable id stay where you are. Is he a boarded surgeon?

My shepherd mix was diagnosed with a torn CCL (canine ACL equivalent). Surgery was recommended.

Second opinion suggested we try conservative therapy first. We did two months of meds, rest, and some controlled excercises.

The little guy is doing great, has no limp, no altered gait, no pain, and physical exam doesn't show laxity.

We definitely got lucky, but before you go drop $3-5k on surgery, get a second opinion and consider the conservative route. I've met several people who chose a non-op approach and anecdotally, all have had good outcomes.

Nah the students in their clinical yeah most definitely help or even do some of the surgery’s. Maybe not the full case with ACL but they ain’t just sitting their monitoring vitals.

The teaching hospitals used by vet schools are usually the best. They only take referrals and usually the specialized cases. So yeah they aren’t cheap, but they will have the most experience and best care most of the time. Assuming you don’t go directly to a board certified specialist In your area.

Sure I wasnt saying they aren't good. Dr. Hosgood was a wizard in the surgery room. Anytime you go to the vet school you'll get the best treatment available. Guys not gonna save him any cash though.

You're correct about the students too. I was getting anesthesia block and small animal surgery block confused. They get to sit there and hold instruments and maybe retract while quivering Equine guys are pretty good about letting you get in there and dirty.

Another vote for considering conservative management. Friend's lab had ACL surgery a month ago, and had to go back in for surgery today to remove the hardware they placed (possible infection.) Poor dog has been pretty miserable and may end up worse off than pre-surgery.

Glad this worked out for you. We tried it with our dog and ended up having to do the surgery anyway. And then during recovery she tore the other one. Which we found out it pretty common. She's 5 months post second surgery and doing great.

FWIW, Mississippi State vet rates are very high, too. Of course, they handle unique cases that some other vets just aren't equipped to handle, thus the high charge.
