Space breakthrough: Scientists teleport photon from Earth to orbit

For the first time, scientists have successfully teleported a photon from the ground to a satellite in orbit.
It’s been 20 years since quantum scientists successfully teleported a photon over 10 miles, proving that quantum entanglement — a process that Albert Einstein called “spooky action at a distance” -- was possible.
Beam me up, Scotty

Now I can take my mudchecking abilities intergalactic.

Sell your airline stocks!

This is really cool stuff.

You still would need 2 quantum objects (2 identical photons) to do this.
one in space and the other on the ground.

Can we frick the aliens though?
Posted on 7/11/17 at 1:39 pm to AUFanInSoCal
And we'd have to locate or quantumly entangled selves to teleport

Yeah, so let me know when they start teleporting cloned sheep.

Quantum teleportation is seen as the basis for unimaginably high-speed communication and foolproof cryptography.
Here's the real world application of this technology
Good thing China is leading the world in developing it

Not really. There is a discussion on Reddit about the topic, and some explanations on the subject. I don't understand it enough to repeat, but it is a good read.

Yep, typical pop science explanation of a really interesting phenomenon. Quantum entanglement has tremendous implications for high speed long distance communication but it is not teleportation, not even close.

Yes and there are some amazingly hot alien races since many of them look extremely like us.

Didnt Transport the proton like in star trek but more like transported the data from earth to the space station instantly between two protons.
More like communication in Enders Game.

Exactly. One of the reasons Mars Rovers seem to make such little progress is that those driving the rovers are getting footage hours behind what is actually happening. They have to program the rover one night and wait until the next day to see what the rover did. Photon teleportation could eventually result in being able to control those rovers in real time just like a drone here on earth. That would vastly increase our ability to explore other celestial bodies remotely.

Photons != protons
