My daughter finally got to her destination late last night. After Southwest stranded her in Hobby Houston, I booked her a flight on United out of Bush. She sat on plane for an hour and a half on the United flight before they had to cancel. Earliest flight she could rebook on was a 5:00am flight for early this morning. Luckily, she had nothing better to do all day yesterday so she played the standby game on 5 flights yesterday and finally got on one late last night. Had she waited for the 5am flight, it ended up 2 hrs late and she would have missed her connection. United seems to always run behind schedule. Delta seems to give much more time for turn arounds. So far, Southwest has cost me about $900 in added flight cost and two hotels nights.

This Southwest thing is starting to cause me heartache.

In-laws staying an additional week. I’m about to go rent them a car.

Book then a private plane and off they go. The best money you'll ever spend.

A little more info on what’s going on with SWA..

“My friend’s husband is a pilot with Southwest. He just posted this an hour ago. I’m not including his name or the photos he shared of packed SWA employee rooms at the airports over the past couple of days (in case his post comes back to bite him with the company—even though he’s stating facts.) He also posted a screenshot of a fellow pilot on hold with SWA Scheduling for over 22 hours. Anyway, here’s some insight for those wondering if this massive round of SWA cancellations is really all due to weather and staffing issues:

“I don’t know what to say. Southwest Airlines has imploded. Their antiquated software system has completely fried. Planes are parked. Crews are stranded in the airports with the passengers, volunteering to take the passengers in the parked planes but the software won’t accept it. Phone lines are overwhelmed for both passenger and crews. I personally spent over two hours trying to get ahold of anyone in the company last night after midnight. A Captain and I did manage to get the one flight put together on Christmas night and got people home.

Kudos to the ops agent and dispatcher for making it happen. We had to manually input a lot of the data and it took over an hour to coordinate with dispatch going back and forth running numbers.

We spent hours trying to get the company to answer and get us a hotel when we landed as they’re all sold out. We were only put in a call que for hours before hanging up. I found one hotel with 4 rooms and we bought our own rooms at 2:30am. I even paid for a Flight Attendants room. We literally have crews sleeping on the airport floors all over the country with nowhere to go. Crews have been calling to fly anyone, anywhere, but the company says the system needs a reset. They have effectively shut down the operations for the rest of year, running 1/3 of the flights so that they can let the computer find and locate the crews and aircraft. Gate agents are in tears. They’ve been yelled at, cussed at, slapped and spit on. Flight attendants have been taking a beating. The frontline employees have had little support or communication. Terminals are standing room only with people having been there for days. Pilot lounges are packed with pilots ready to fly and nowhere to go.

Embarrassing is an understatement. I’m going on my second of three days off, still stuck on the east coast and still expected to show up in the morning with no schedule. And I’m willing to fly all day if needed. Because that’s nothing compared to the passengers needing meds in bags that are lost and mothers traveling with kids, having been stuck for the same amount of days in the terminal. In 24 years, I’ve never seen anything like this. Heads need to roll! Rumors on media are floating that there is a lack of crews and pilots are staging sick calls. Absolutely not true at all. This is a computer system meltdown.

Thousands of crew members are sitting in hotels and airports with nowhere to go. This airline has failed miserably.”

That is outrageous. Heads will certainly roll. Hard to fathom this level of a shite show from a major U.S. airline.

Can't they revert to a pre software system?

I mean jets flew for 30 years without.

Or damn. Make an exception this one time.

I can't watch, but I also can't look away. Didn't know it was possible for an airline to shite the bed to this degree.

Wow. The poor folks who are trying to get somewhere or get home. This is a disaster and they should have had some backup plan in case of failure of the system.

Really interested to see how Southwest comes out of this. I've always been pretty impressed with them and their operations so this has been quite surprising.

Now you have SWA agents calling the cops on customers because they’re trying to get answers.

LINK

Stock fell again today. Fascinating to watch a major corporation meltdown in real time like this.

Follow up on this post from prplhze2000 - I had a SWA pilot in our jumpseat this afternoon who confirmed most of this. The working theory is that it started with the ramp issues in Denver, and it snowballed into a system wide computer crash. He was just trying to get home, after being stuck in the airport.

Mind boggling.

It’s like watching a train wreck, car wreck, and plane crash simultaneously… they can’t unfrick themselves and if you look in the comments, news affiliates are asking to use footage

I talked to two people today who had issues with this and were stuck. It's all over. One went from laguardia to Newark to then fly to Florida then nola. Another is taking an Amtrak.

Whoever called from southwest and that cop himself both deserve to burn in hell for that.

I'm sure this has been already stated, but instead of SW having 20 flightsh daily to the same cities, maybe have 5 or 6.

What good are all those flights if they keep getting canceled?

If they weren’t threatening anyone or being violent, that’s was totally uncalled for.

I keep hearing that we should be sympathetic to Southwest employees. Where is the company’s sympathy for their own fricking passengers?

Especially the ones that bought tickets for flights that were supposed to occur days ago but are still stranded at an airport. Some of those people have been through absolute hell.
