They had that old man who started and ran the company
His name was Herb Kelleher. He and his replacement, Colleen Barrett ran SWA the old way. After she retired that's when the decline began.

If you’ve been flying southwest the last 20 years this isn’t a shock. They lost the Luv
If I have to check a bag and if I can get in A or the first half of B… I generally still prefer SWA. I don’t want to be nickel and dime.. I’ll pay a bit more up front.
But what everyone has said is true. The pre boarding is absolutely out of control. Jetway Jesus miracles are absolutely a thing. The “Luv” is gone.

Wife and I took SW to Cancun out of Dallas in the fall for the first time in years. We were both blown away how downhill they had gone
The plane was a POS. My seat was torn leather and both flights didn’t have any chargers and no more free WiFi.
Just didn’t have that SW charm like they used to have. And out of Dallas, flights out of DFW beat them 90% of the time.

As a former SWA employee this makes me sad. It all started when they bought AirTran and grew too fast to be "like Delta Airlines". The SWA management turned their backs on everything that made SWA great.
Bowing to Wall Street will always ruin a company.

I think a lot depends on your departure airport. SWA out of MSY is a horrible experience and I’ll pay double to avoid it. Spirit has several nonstop flights out of MSY to places I go and the experience is exponentially more pleasant

You must not fly very often.

You got to love getting boarding position A5 and being the 46th person to get on the plane
Last fall I had quick trip to Memphis for a meeting, I usually fly out of Austin even though SA is technically closer. Pay for priority seating, get A7 or so. Go to gate and apparently there was a Historic Black Church Convention in Austin that weekend, every wheel chair in the airport was lined up along the wall plus several folks needing them but sitting in chairs that had to wait for the chairs to be emptied. I shite you not by the time I got boarded I was past the exit rows. I believe there were 3 to 4 folks needing wheel chairs to exit once we got to Memphis, sometimes all you can do

Most people don't make that connection. I was a contractor there for 2? years and watched it happen. Most dumbasses don't realize that unless you're taking the 5:15 outbound and a return at 23:15, they're almost never the lowest fare, and haven't been, since then. The Jetway Jesus miracles and the abject shithole that is HOU (no valet parking at the time like IAH unless you were in <24 hour parking) and the surrounding area being a complete dump didn't help.
They've never lost any bag I've checked with a firearm, but neither have Delta or United.

At least you can still get Wild Turkey...
They're really bad now.
I'll pay more to avoid them and I uesd to be A-List Preferred and my wife flew for free.

Don't book a basic economy ticket on any airline.

That’s why I prefer AA is because I’m 30 minutes from their hub and I can go from DFW airport nonstop to anywhere in the world. The terminals are fantastic and their admirals club is top-notch
They also beat Southwest on price 90% of the time out of Dallas

Southwest was way cooler when they had the gold planes with red bellies

True, I do the same out of IAH. However, being captive to a hub also means I could fly IAH-DFW-NRT on AA cheaper than I can fly from IAH-NRT direct, and usually by a few hundred dollars. But as long as daddy company was paying, I didn't give a shite.

It’s crazy how many people like Southwest because of the nostalgic $39 one-way flights
That company died a long time ago. They are just as greedy as all of them now
My wife went on a girls weekend from Dallas to New Orleans a couple months ago and the only flights that matched her time were Southwest and it was $450 round-trip. From freaking Dallas to New Orleans
That used to be a $99 special

Exact reason I haven't flown Southwest in years. Frontier, Breeze, and Allegiance stilloffer those kind of deals.
