Sounds like a smart move for Southwest to cut the bloat. Not sure how you conclude this means they are in trouble.

I think their troubles run deeper than that, Kelleher found a niche, had a few laws enacted in his favor to create in effect, the world's largest commuter airline, he ran it beautifully, for his time there, they're stuck in the past in many ways, but as long as they stayed in their lane they were okay, but getting a little too big for their little breeches without being prepared to step into a larger arena is kicking their arse

Their headquarters started looking a lot like the Twitter headquarters where it was more of a place to hang out rather than work.

I liked Herb's policy of mandatory company TGIFs

Yeah Gary Kelly smashed morale outside of headquarters. He kept HQ fun since that is all he knew. I figured that once the Airtran executives started taking over, shite would get even worse which it did.

seems they have less flights than they used to.

You can thank Boeing for that.

wouldn't doubt that for a bit, ironic how the weakling companies that get taken over always seem to get their management, who weren't doing so great at the time of takeover, placed back in top management positions, I'm sure it has nothing to do with pre-takeover, under the table negotiated deals

Let’s not forget AirTran is basically ValuJet which might be the worst airline in history so Southwest has some pretty horrible lineage.

Of course that would never happen. I predicted this as soon as WN bought them. And you started seeing the Airtrash executives get higher and higher positions.

Swa got some planes, ATL (which has pretty much be a failure) and the international routes that they had been desiring. The Boeing situation has hurt them but this was likely to happen anyway.

After she retired that's when the decline began.

Started when Gary Kelly took over.....Colleen was still there. He started with the culture shift away from what Herb and Colleen had.

Because they have never had mass layoffs like this before. You could say that they had layoffs when they shut down cities but they did offer jobs in other cities.

Southwest lucked out int the early 2000’s with a sweetheart jet fuel deal that fixed their fuel cost for 10 years

Can you point to evidence of them “lucking out on a sweetheart deal”?

I couldn't remember Gary Kelly's name. I met Colleen, but never got to meet Herb.

Used to be low cost with amazing customer service. Now they're the same price as everyone else with average customer service.

And the disability boarding thing is so true. I flew just last week out of Baltimore and a flight I was on had 17 pre-boarders. SEVENfrickINGTEEN.

AA absorbed the charity cases that were Reno, TWA, USAir/America West and although they didn't move the physical HQ, it's the former heads of the charity cases running that airline right now(would include TCA and AirCal but I'm sure those folks are all gone)

Boeing is another example

I still recall their massive shutdown that left people stranded a couple of years ago. I've never flown Southwest, and now I'm not sure that I will.

Delta, American, and United have their issues, but I've been bailed out multiple times where a flight was cancelled but they could move me to one of the other two airlines to get me where I needed to be.

Yeah Kelly came in and 'optimized' the flight schedule which was needed but then implemented RX which then turned into 'station management' (I believe was the name of the program after RX but it was the same program). After probably a decade and millions wasted Kelly finally admitted that the program was a waste.
