The downside is that I won’t get to miss the midair miracles where these same folks were wheeled to their seat in a wheelchair on departure, only to sprint off the plane on arrival.

This.

The dude that had to wrangle the dozen wheelchairs after they boarded was furious. Like pushing the chairs around loudly and talking shite about this. Even the employees know what’s up.

MDW - ABQ didn’t have this problem.

I fly Southwest 90% of the time .It is convenient for work trips from NOLA to Texas and my trips to Western U.S. I have A-list and a companion pass every year, so my wife flies for free and I am automatically given a boarding assignment between A15-30 with my wife always automatically assigned right behind me. So we always have a good seat, even with the ridiculous number of early boarders they allow out of NOLA. I also have a lot of free flights each year due to large accumulation of rewards points. But I get the hate. If I were not A-list and was boarding in the C group, I'd hate it too.

I think I'm about to go on the worst possible flight configuration.
New orleans to Baltimore on Spirit.
And back.
But it was $89 round trip. Lol.

I did that one time on SWA figuring I would get the empty middle. The plane was overbooked. The last guy in the plane took the middle seat and he was at least 350 pounds.

SW used to be great. Low fares and would give out drink tickets like candy. I flew them all the time for work and rewards program was great.

They started to go downhill really bad though over the last 2 or 3 years. Lost our bags on vacation a couple years ago and pretty much told me, too fricking bad. They aren’t on time anymore and cancel flights left and right. I quit flying them a couple years ago. Not going back unless they make major changes and this change isn’t major.

Often times there is no wheelchair. It's just a bunch of seemingly able bodied adults that somehow got pre-boarding designation. It's outrageous.

many "Jackson Family Reunion 2009" tshirts and the like amongst these groups, typically.

Do not like. I always liked picking the aisle or window seat next to a skinny old couple

So I thought I wouldn’t like the way they do it, but last time it worked out where I was able to get in the 2nd row then the 7th.

While we're at it, can we use lap bars that don't raise until its that row's turn to debark?

It is a shame the next generation of men will never know the thrill of a beautiful woman boarding in the C group possibly asking if she can sit in the temporarily available middle seat in your row.

On an early morning business flight, there is no better confidence boost to go close that sale as soon as you land.

And also unfair to those in the front of the plane, as all overhead bins will be taken.

Front to back is fine if you have semi competent flyers and a FA staged mid-cabin directing people. Telling them not to put backpack in overhead and under seats.

Maybe I’m just dumb, but I don’t really understand the concerns about overhead bin space with back-to-front boarding.

Ultimately somebody has to get on the plane last, and whoever gets on last is going to be at a disadvantage when it comes to overhead bins. I don’t really understand why it’s any less “fair” for that to happen to people in the front of the plane.

If the concern is overhead bins in first class/business class, that should be fairly easy to manage IMO.

Like I said, maybe I’m just dumb.

Flown Southwest off/on for 30 years. I think they hit their peak success somewhere in the 2005-2010 window and they have declined since that time.

The open seating and boarding process was okay in the day because it was once different. Everyone has flown Southwest and now realizes it isn’t that great. It is somewhere between a cattle call and refugee airline.

Their fares aren’t as cheap as they have led folks to believe.

They all know it's bullshite. I've had this conversation with flight attendants multiple times while waiting for the plane to board. (I go straight to exit row and they are always hanging out there while the plane boards) It pisses them off just as much, if not more, than us because they have to deal with the degenerates. The ticket agents aren't allowed to question the severity of injuries for obvious reasons, especially in this day and age. They just tell me to write as many letters as possible to complain. I've never taken the time to do so but this is probably the biggest reason why they are making these changes.

Last year I flew 30 business select round trip flights on Southwest and that was about my 4th year in a row doing that. I haven’t flown them one time this year because I couldn’t take the pre boarders and the no assigned seats any longer.

Their point system is the best in the business and I racked up well over 1,000,000 points while spending plenty. I know there has to be plenty of customers out there like me that kicked them to the curb for these two things. That was $18k a year I was spending with them, every year and then went to zero. They had to make a change. Not sure I’ll ever switch back but this is a good step

I've always found Southwest to have the best fares - plus you dont have to pay for bags - checked or not - that makes a significant difference.
