The fact that that is the amazing part of the story is a bit telling.

the other piece that isn't talked about are the guys who ride sick call so they can get their mileage...
personally I think you should get mileage only for a scheduled appointment...that would stop a lot of the abuse

bullshite. Give our vets vouchers for their medical care and let them go and get the service they prefer. Why do we have to have a totally separate medical system for vets? The gov't NEVER delivers cost effective products or services. NEVER.

People dying is sensationalism. That VA had an ER. The patients could have shown up there and been treated. To say they waited on some list and had no access to care is a lie.

At least 40 U.S. veterans died waiting for appointments at the Phoenix Veterans Affairs Health Care system, many of whom were placed on a secret waiting list.
The secret list was part of an elaborate scheme designed by Veterans Affairs managers in Phoenix who were trying to hide that 1,400 to 1,600 sick veterans were forced to wait months to see a doctor, according to a recently retired top VA doctor and several high-level sources.

I am a physician not at the VA.
The VA is a microcosm of why government bureaucracy doesn't work.
Another huge problem with the VA is they have trouble attracting the best and brightest because of their crappy pay.
(not saying you're a bad doctor, just saying on average)

Those are reasons why you think it shouldn't be abolished.

My problem with the VA is the ridiculous amount of loops they make you jump through.
The compensation side is a joke at best, I had to fight for 5 years to get my proper rating.
Then, it takes forever to get an appointment, sit in a waiting room for 4 to 5 hours and wonder why vets are annoyed?
You are asking a group of people, who have all gone through some type of survival training to admit issues to an organization they have little trust in. Mostly because they have been given little reason to trust the VA.
It is a broken system, that needs to be overhauled from top to bottom.

Doctors working in their own private practices have to kill to eat. VA docs see 12 patients a day and get paid. Lazy nurses and staff (and some docs) who are typical government employees. If a privately owned practice saw 12 patients a day, they would be out of business in a month. Pay VA docs a base plus productivity compensation where they can make as much as private MDs and get government benefits - the number of patients seen in a day triples.

The VA's poor quality of care led to my grandfather developing bed sores that extended his hospital stay and recovery.
People get bed sores at MD Anderson, Sloan-Kettering, UCSF, Mayo Clinic, etc.

The federal government shouldn't be paying to train doctors. Locally and privately run hospitals are more than competent to do the same job.
That's not true. My Level 1 hospital in a major city is relies on the VA for about 200 residency spots.

So they were too dumb to walk in to the ER is not the VA's fault. Many healthcare systems have waiting lists. Call a good internal medicine practice in your town and ask for a new patient appointment and see how quickly you can get in.

The health care side of the VA is fine. The side of the VA that handles claims needs some major changes.

This is an ignorant thing for a "physician at the VA" to say.

Only a moron would want the VA abolished. If we send out people to fight useless wars, the minimum we can do for them is healthcare post service.
