I don't necessarily agree with abolishing the VA. But why can't we distinguish between cutting departments and cutting the services they provide. I want the DoE gone, but schools aren't going anywhere. All of these services could still be established and managed under a different entity. Not every single public service needs a 10,000 employee Washington bureaucracy at the top of it.

Veteran here with a 60% rating
I've been using the VA for all my medical reasons since 2008 and haven't had any problems. Longest I've had to wait was probably 30 minutes. (Baton Rouge and New Orleans facilities) Most of the complaints you hear about are the disgruntled ones who cause a scene yelling because something didn't go there way. Yelling and belittling people will never get you help faster. Now do they have a right to be a little frustrated because of how they were treated years ago? Probably so, but it has changed dramatically now.
One thing the VA is good at is preventing future medical problems. Being 36 and in good health a private doctor wouldn't order blood work and a physical once a year. My doctor at the VA does this so if anything were to develop I know it would be caught early.
Now the rating side of the VA??? Thats an entire different topic.

No one is saying get rid of the benefits. There's no reason we simply can't provide them with a military healthcare similar to Tricare for active duty and retired.

Why not keep the hospitals and clinics but change the payer to Medicare? Tricare is horrible all around no matter which product you have from them

I'm curious why we can't just come up with a dollar figure on what the VA healthcare is worth per patient, and do a voucher type of system or they can use something like Tricare to no cost at them. If it's worth say $300/ month they can go to the Va or whatever or use the money to pay for their own insurance.
Frankly if I was a vet id most likely get private insurance if at all possible just to have more options. Obviously this is not easy and for some that have been blinded or a major disability it's different. But for most for things like hearing, eyesight, etc this would work very well.

The VA has a caring and compassionate work force... sometimes. It amazes me the teeth you have to pull, as a doctor, to get a stat X-ray or ekg. Heaven forbid you need an ultrasound done in a reasonable amount of time. The laziness of some of the techs is unbearable. That said, the nurses I worked with were some of the best. The system feels broken, though. When vets are transferred to an ICU on a weekend because of NSTEMI and there is no staff for the cath lab nor a cardiology attending to take care of the catheterization, you know we aren't doing the best for our vets.

Another huge problem with the VA is they have trouble attracting the best and brightest because of their crappy pay.
Two physicians I know, one is a relative, and was asked not to return to two different residency programs, then worked at walk in med clinics for several years, the other was asked to leave his private practice group because of competency/liability issues, they have both been employed by the VA for about 20 years.

I would probably never use the VA for health care if this were the case.
