Some of these restaurants should be ashamed of themselves.

First off, I'm a big believed in supporting LA's industries....rice, seafood, fish, sugar, etc.

I have been to three restaurants in the past week that have all served substitutes but used nuances and deceptive language to try and pass off clear foreign meat as a Louisiana product.

1. Catfish. What they're serving is this Basa. Chinese cheap meat. Some people like the taste but you can taste the difference. Even in how it tears. Others will just label it "Fish" then when you ask, it's "Catfish".

2. Substitute crab and shrimp. Look, Shrimp is almost impossible to tell but they'll sometimes use words like "Gulf" Shrimp. FYI, they didn't tell you what Gulf. Most of its import from Asia. Crab you can tell by sight and taste. Easy.

3. Rice and Crawfish. IMO there is no substitute with crawfish being certainly more egregious offense. Especially when you market yourself as a Cajun restaurant located in LA.

Still, none of this would be a problem if they were just upfront with their customers but I understand, margins are slim and competition is fierce

So, name the restaurants. Nothing will change if you beat around the bush when calling them out. If you're confident in your observations, name names.

Funny.

I don't try to ruin the name of small businesses or affect someone else's ability to make a living. If people didn't like it they'd quit eating it.

It is illegal in LA to label your food as LA seafood if it isn't from there

Of course they don't to comply, but there is other ways to imply it without saying it. That's my point.

Meh. If those restaurants gave a shite about what they were doing they wouldn't mislead their customers in an effort to essentially steal from them. Misrepresenting what you're selling someone is as much theft as walking out without paying after you've finished your meal. My opinion only, of course.

In Louisiana it’s illegal to list “catfish” on your menu if it isn’t. If it’s listed as “fried fish” it’s likely Basa or Swai, both from shitpools in Vietnam

So they did not label it as Louisiana seafood, correct?

Picadilly started this, Although they actually called it catfish until they were sued and had to change it to country fried fish.

Catfish. What they're serving is this Basa.

Went to the Francis in St Francisville last night for the first time since COvid started. They used to have really good thin fried catfish. They are serving Basa now and its not even close to what they were serving before. Service was fricking terrible as well. The amazing thing was people were waiting over an hour for a table when we were leaving at 7 pm. Can't believe people would wait for that long for shitty food and service in south La.

I just read the OP. Please don't let this be one of those threads where the OP has enough mouth for another row of teeth, then turns into Lil Pudd’nhead when questioned aboot what specific restaurants he is speaking of.

It is only us reading here. It is not like Charlize Theron is eating at these scam places.

ETA: OK, read through now, and Lil Pudd’nhead should not start any more threads, with his half-information self.

ETA: Why are the wee downvote queers on this post? Odd that not one of them had the sack to say what it was that they found so offensive. fricking girly men.

I remember Hymel’s switched to “fried fish” a few years before they closed. Piccadilly did it as someone mentioned. I always ask if its not clear. Basa seems to fry to a much flatter appearance than real catfish. So it seems.
