AI is really, really good at writing brute force code. It is very poor at interpreting the problem and programming. Too many people think that programming or software engineering is writing code, its not. That is the boring part. All these firms will learn the hard way that AI is not great at programming it is very good at coding.

Definitely doesn’t help that we continue to import South Asian and East Asian F1s by the thousands who graduate with engineering degrees and somehow manage to stay after graduation. They’re fricking up the engineering job market big time.

A lot of these blue collar simpletons show why they weren’t cut out for college. You can’t just eliminate millions of jobs and not undergo massive economic turbulence. The current president injected trillions into the economy in 2020 to stave off two months of unemployment.

The H1Bs are a massive problem, and I don't understand why we can't do anything about it. They are almost always incompetent. And then there are cultural issues on top of it that don't help the situation.

These are not highly skilled workers 90% of the time.

What do you mean by “a while”?
I’m not an expert in such things -all I know is that my oldest was told all 4 years at LSU that she wouldn’t find a job when she graduated bc of AI

She has a pretty good job coding it wasn’t as devastating in 4 years as she was told

It will become more devastating each year. We honestly have no clue what the job market will look like in 2 years. Which is a sign of rapid progress but might also be a sign of extreme turbulence.

Just curious because I’m IT dumb.

Can AI adapt itself?

Won’t current AI reach a point of obsolescence if we don’t continue to advance?

My BIL is a software engineer in his early 50’s. He says H1B1 is a much larger threat than AI. He is made to take his first hour of the day to teach the H1B1s what to do for the day, and his last two hours of the day redoing what they did. According to him they are useless and his company would have done better hiring one competent American than the team of six stooges they hired.

Im in the middle of the H1B1s and the AI sandwich. I fortunately have spent a large part of my career in every department in my company before landing in IT.

On the H1B1 front, you can hire 6 of them for the price of 1 onshore person. I have 2 teams of 3 offshore employees. One team is way more competent than what your BIL experiences. The other 3 are more in line with what you described. I work with probably 100 of the offshore folks and largely they are what you described.

My job could disappear tomorrow but because of my experience and understanding of the Industry and company, I think that's why im still alive. If im being super honest, I wasnt that good at coding, but im able to really crank out code now that AI is available because I know the industry and what is valuable. Giving instruction and being very clear and concise with the prompt along witb having a clear understanding of the end result is what I believe is going to be super valuable going forward.

I personally used Claude AI to write an app that is now on my phone. Background, I know zero about coding nor did I ever have the desire. It only took me 22 iterations via Claude (lol), but I got the app built and now on my phone.

IMO, AI isn't going to replace software engineers but it will replace those that dont use AI.

according to my tech nerd kid - some can but in order to make big changes or adaptations- some human oversight is needed

My daughter is good at finding a problem and programming - add in her coding skills.

She won’t lose her job anytime soon.

You could hire her to be his nanny if she does lose her job. The little boy she babysits on the side already asked if she would homeschool him
